Chelsea v Arsenal betting preview

The Blues are clicking into gear sooner than Sarri expected

Chelsea got off to the perfect start with a 3-0 win at Huddersfield last weekend but prior to that they suffered a 2-0 defeat to Manchester City in the Community Shield. The new tactics seemed to work out well for Chelsea, the team currently undergoing a transformation under Sarri. The bad news is that Alvaro Morata was a shadow, no better than he was in the second part of last season. Chelsea have kept a clean sheet in 5 of their last 6 home matches against Arsenal in all competitions and another low-scoring affair is on the card.

Eden Hazard made a cameo from the bench on the opening round and is expected to start from the off against the Gunners. The Belgian star should replace either Willian or Pedro on the flanks, or play up front in place of Alvaro Morata. In midfield, Mateo Kovacic and Cesc Fabregas still lack match fitness, so Ross Barkley could once again line up alongside N'Golo Kante and Jorginho in the middle of the park and Ruben Loftus-Cheek providing a further option. Gary Cahill is coming back into contention at centre-back, and along with Andreas Christensen will hope to oust either Antonio Rudiger or David Luiz.

The Gunners were outplayed by Manchester City on the opening weekend

Arsenal's 2018-19 campaign under new manager Unai Emery spluttered into life with a 2-0 home defeat against reigning champions Manchester City. The Spaniard will hope his side are a little more defensively disciplined than they were against City last week. The Gunners gained positive results against Chelsea in recent times. They remained unbeaten in five head-to-head meetings last term, beating the Blues on penalties in the FA Community Shield and over two legs of their Carabao Cup semi-final. This summer, Arsenal drew 1-1 with the Blues in the International Champions Cup.

Ainsley Maitland-Niles has been ruled out for six to eight weeks, but Nacho Monreal has returned to training and could reclaim the left-back spot in the continued absence of Sead Kolasinac. Laurent Koscielny misses out with an Achilles problem, while Danny Welbeck will be assessed. Up front, Alexandre Lacazette is expected to play as central striker, with Pierre Emerick Aubameyang and Mesut Ozil (or Henrikh Mhkitaryan) on his flanks. Petr Cech should get the nod over Bernd Leno as goalkeeper.
