Chelsea vs Newcastle betting preview

Chelsea have won 4 of their last 6 Premier League outings

Chelsea currently sit 4th in the EPL standings, well behind league leaders Liverpool (-10 points). The Blues missed the chance to make it three consecutive league wins last time out when they were held to a goalless draw by Southampton. Prior to that, Maurizio Sarri's men narrowly beat Watford 2-1 and Crystal Palace 0-1, both away from home. The Blues progressed in the FA Cup last weekend, beating 2-0 Nottingham Forest at Stamfrod Bridge but suffered a 1-0 defeat at Wembley against Tottenham in the first leg of the Carabao Cup semifinal. Anyway, the Blues dominated large parts of the game against Spurs as they hit the woodwork twice to no avail.

Alvaro Morata is a doubt after missing Tuesday’s Carabao Cup match though Ruben Loftus-Cheek remains out. Olivier Giroud, Pedro and Willian all returned from their own injuries and are pushing for a start. We expect Eden Hazard to play as false nine, with Mateo Kovacic getting the nod over Ross Barkley in midfield as the Croatian midfield was rested to the bench at Wembley in midweek. In defense, David Luiz should return at the expense of Andreas Christensen, with Marcos Alonso and Cesar Azpilicueta restored in the starting XI in place of Davide Zappacosta and Emerson Palmieri.

Newcastle have lost their last 6 away matches against Chelsea in all competitions

Newcastle have won just one of their last nine fixtures in all competitions and enter this match on the back of a 0-2 home defeat against Manchester UTD in Premier League and a 1-1 draw at home against Blackburn in the FA Cup. Rafa Benitez's men are hovering just 2 points above the relegation zone and struggling in front of the goal as they boast the Premier League’s 2nd worst attacking side. The Magpies have scored a meagre 15 goals in 21 matches so far and have found the net once in the last 4 league games. As to direct encounters, Newcastle have won only one of their last 24 away league matches against Chelsea.

Ki Sung-Yueng and Yoshinori Muto are both away at the Asian Cup and will miss the game while Kenedy will be ineligible to face his parent club this weekend. Florian Lejeune made his first Newcastle appearance of the season in the FA Cup last time out but is expected to be benched, as well as Ciaran Clark. The likes of Stefan Schar, Jamaal Lascelles and Federico Fernandez will form the three man backline, while Matt Ritchie and DeAndre Yedlin appear to be the favourites for the two wing-back roles. Up front, Ayoze Perez and Christian Atsu should support the lone striker Salomon Rondon in a 3-4-2-1 starting system.

Chelsea vs Newcastle Starting Lineups

Chelsea (4-3-3): Kepa; Azpilicueta, Rudiger, David Luiz, Alonso; Kantè, Jorginho, Kovacic; Pedro, Hazard, Willian
Newcastle (3-4-2-1): Dubravka; Schar, Lascelles, Fernandez; Yedlin, Ritchie, Hayden, Diamè; Ayoze Perez, Atsu; Rondon
