Chelsea have lost only one of their last 18 matches in European competition

Chelsea recorded a 2-1 triumph away at Watford at the weekend. They are fourth in the Premier League and exceeding expectations after an underwhelming start of the season with straight losses against Valencia and Liverpool on September. As to the Champions League, the Blues kicked off with a 1-0 loss to Valencia at this venue, before shading a 2-1 verdict at Lille and then edging out Ajax 1-0 courtesy of a late strike from Michy Batshuayi. Despite losing at home to Man UTD in the EFL Cup last week, Chelsea’s form remains strong with eight wins out of nine in all competitions.

Both of N'Golo Kante or Ross Barkley may return after the pair of have been being sidelined for a few weeks. Jorginho is suspended domestically for one game, so will be a certain starter. Ruben Loftus-Cheek remains out. No changes are expected up front as Tammy Abraham should get the nod over Michy Batshuayi and should be likely supported by Christian Pulisic, Mason Mount and William. The likes of Pedro, Callum Hudson Odoi and Olivier Giroud provide more offensive alternatives. In defence, Andreas Christensen is nearing a return, while Antonio Rudiger is out.

Ajax have won their last four away matches in the Champions League

Ajax have already established a six-point advantage at the top of the Eredivisie standings. Anyway, they almost blew a three-goal advantage against PEC Zwolle at the weekend, before David Neres last strike earned a 4-2 success. In Champions League, the Dutch outfit beat Lille 3-0 on home turf and then prevailed by the same scoreline away to Valencia. In the third group stage match, the Lancers suffered a narrow loss at the Amsterdam Arena at the hands of Chelsea, after Quincy Promes' goal was wrongly ruled off or offside by VAR. Ajax are on a 4 match winning streak in Europe on their travels. They have beaten strong teams such as Juventus, Real Madrid, Valencia and Tottenham

Edson Alvarez could come back into the Ajax side, with Donny van de Beek being used in a role further forward. Lisandro Martinez is a major doubt after lasting only 28 minutes of Ajax's match last Saturday. As a result, Razvan Marin is expected to start while 17-year-old Ryan Gravenberch is also an option. Dusan Tadic is likely to start as false nine, and this could see Quincy Promes dropping out of the starting lineup, despite his brace scored at the weekend. Sergiño Dest was rested against Zwolle and is pushing to be restored in the starting XI here.
