JOSHUA vs RUIZ Jr. BETTING PREVIEW
AJ is expected to respond Deontay Wilder with an explosive performance of his ownAnthony Joshua (22-0, 21 KOs) is hot favourite in the betting to claim career win number 23 at Madison Square Garden in New York. He has only gone the distance once in 22 career fights. On his last fight, back in September 2018, Alexander Povetkin was ahead on the cards in September before AJ won by TKO in the seventh. Prior to that, a 10th-round KO over Carlos Takam in October 2017 preceded a 12-rounder with Joseph Parker in March 2018.
Being his first fight in the US, it is reasonable to expect Joshua to go looking for a stoppage as soon as the opportunity presents itself. The Olympic gold medallist is the much bigger man at 6’6″ compared to Ruiz at 6’2″. Plus, his 82″ reach advantage is far superior to the Mexican's 74″. Against Ruiz the preferred tactics also would be to box from the outside, use his natural advantages and slowly discourage and disarm the brave challenge
50/1 Joshua to win in rounds 1-3
Ruiz's sole defeat on his record came against Joseph ParkerAndy Ruiz Jr. is 32-1, with 22 knockouts. That form has him ranked 14th in the world and 4th in the USA, behind Deontay Wilder, Jarrell Miller and Dominic Breazeal. He was hastily drafted in as a replacement after Jarrell Miller failed a drug test. He’s an excellent technical boxer and came really close to winning a world title against Joseph Parker in December 2016. That loss remains Ruiz’s only defeat in 33 fights. The Mexican-American has quietly accumulated three wins since then against respectable but opponent status fighters. He stopped Alexander Dimitrenko in five rounds last month. Prior to that, he recorded a first round KO over Devin Vargas (20-4-0) in Carson, before out-pointing Kevin Johnson (32-9-1) over 10 rounds.
Ruiz is a small heavyweight and only fights in this weight class due to the extra weight. His most significant victories were accumulated against fighters whose stars were in decline. That list includes a tired Siarhei Liakhovich in 2014 and an aging Ray Austin in 2016. Despite his boxing ability, this is a huge physical mismatch. We expect Ruiz to be picked off by the champion’s rock-solid jab.
