LIVERPOOL v SOUTHAMPTON BETTING PREVIEW
Liverpool need to overturn a 1-0 deficit from the first leg as a Nathan Redmond’s goal at St Mary’s has given the Saints a slight advantage. They come into this match on the back of a 3-2 defeat against Swansea on Saturday lunch-time and they are now trailing Chelsea by 10 points. While the Reds’ 6-1 rout of Saints in 2015 is a result that sticks in the memory, it must be pointed out that Liverpool have not beaten the south coast club since then, losing twice and drawing once.
Jurgen Klopp will undoubtedly field a stronger side this time. WIth Sadio Mane away on African Cup on Nations, Daniel Sturridge is expected to partner Philippe Coutinho and Roberto Firmino up front, while Divock Origi provide a further option. Jordan Henderson picked up a heel injury at the weekend and he is rated as doubtful. Joel Matip will be restored at the heart of the four man backline, as Ragnar Klavan's performance against Swansea was very disappointing.
Southampton come into this match on the back of a 3-0 win against Leicester on Sunday. The Saints have won three of their last four matches in all competitions, but those wins came on home soil. When the pair met in the Premier League back in November, there was not an awful lot between them either, with the duo playing out a goalless draw. The Saints have recorded 4 clean sheets in this competition, all against Premier League clubs. They have not conceded a goal in two home games against Liverpool this season.
Manager Claude Puel is sweating on the fitness of Virgil Van Dijk after he limped off last time out with a knock. Jose Fonte has joined West Ham few days ago, hence Jack Stephens could be required to partner Maya Yoshida. The likes of Shane Long and Jay Rodrgiuez are in contention for a starting berth as central forward. Sofiane Boufal is expected to miss three weeks with a knee injury and has joined Charlie Austin, Matt Targett, Jeremy Pied and Alex McCarthy on the sidelines.
