After reaching the semi finals in South Africa 2010 and then winning Copa America a year later, Uruguay’s qualifying form for these finals took a bit of a dip. Anyway, they crushed Jordan in the play offs and their subsequent build up has been fairly low key including wins over Northern Ireland (1-0) and Slovenia (2-0) earlier this month.

Suarez is recovering from knee surgery last month following his 31 goal performance for Liverpool in Premier League. If Suarez fails to recover in time, all eyes will be on PSG attacker Edinson Cavani.  Midfielder Diego Perez will be pressing for a starting spot, but Tabarez is set to start Walter Gargano and Egidio Arevalo Rios in the middle of the park.

Costa Rica depended on some sturdy defending during qualifying – they surrendered a CONCACAF-low seven goals in 10 games – to book its ticket to Brazil. But since then, that rock-solid defense has crumbled. They’ve conceded 11 goals in six games since, leading to a disappointing 1-1-4 record. A 4-0 defeat to Chile, 1-0 loss to Korea Republic and 3-1 loss to Japan suggests they have plenty to find to be competitive.

Costa Rica were rocked by the news that Alvaro Saborio will miss the World Cup due to injury. They will send out their scoring champion in attacking midfielder Bryan Ruiz and will include Arsenal striker Joel Campbell as the spearhead to their attack. Full-back Heiner Mora is definitely out of contention after breaking his heel.

In eight previous meetings against Uruguay, Costa Rica have never won, losing six and drawing two. Goals could be tough to come by in this fixture, despite a strong attacking line-up on show for Uruguay.
