ENGLAND v COSTA RICA BETTING PREVIEW
England play their last friendly before World Cup debutEngland are coming fresh off the back of a 2-1 win over Nigeria at Wembley, extending their unbeaten run to 13 matches. A 1-0 friendly win over the Netherlands earlier this year saw was followed by a 1-1 draw against Italy, when Southgate's men were denied by a late penalty. This is the second time these countries have met, the first being in the 2014 World Cup group stage when England had already been eliminated and it finished 0-0.
Southgate will have Liverpool duo Jordan Henderson and Trent Alexander-Arnold available after joining up following the Champions League Final. Jamie Vardy is almost certain to play a part after sitting out against Nigeria, and he could be partnered by either Harry Kane or Raheem Sterling in a 3-5-2 formation. Jordan Pickford is widely expected to be England's first-choice goalkeeper in Russia, but Southgate could give Jack Butland a chance to impress. Fabian Delph and Phil Jones are not 100% fit and will not be risked. That means that Kyle Walker will play again as centre-back alongside John Stones and Harry Maguire.
Costa Rica enter this match on the back of 3-0 winCosta Rica booked their place in Russia in dramatic fashion last October, securing second place behind Mexico in the CONCACAF group courtesy of a very late goal. Since securing their spot in Russia, the Ticos have found results and goals hard to come by. The played two friendlies last March, with mixed results - a 1:0 success over Scotland and a 1-0 defeat to Tunisia. Few days ago they beat 3-0 Northern Ireland and they will play their last warm up game against Belgium on 11th June. When Costa Rica last met England, at the 2014 World Cup, the match finished 0-0 in Belo Horizonte and remarkably the Ticos won the group, got past Greece on penalties in the next round and then only bowed out on spot-kicks against the Netherlands in the quarter-finals.
Óscar Ramírez is expected to make changes from the side that beat Northern Ireland last time out, with key players including Marco Urena and Bryan Ruiz in line for a recall. Sunderland's Bryan Oviedo in line to start at wing-back, forming a five man defense alongside Celtic's Cristian Gamboa, Oscar Duarte, Giancarlo Gonzalez and Johnny Acosta. Up fron, Johan Venegas is expected to lead the line, with former Arsenal player Joel Campbell providing support from the right flank.
