CHELSEA vs SOUTHAMPTON BETTING PREVIEW
Chelsea secured a 2-1 win at Burnley on Thursday night but they still trail 4th placed Tottenham by 5 points. With Antonio Conte’s future at Stamford Bridge firmly in doubt, a disappointing Champions League elimination, and a Top 4 spot in the league looking ever more unlikely, the FA Cup is the Blues' last attempt at silverware this season. Chelsea beat Leicester City 2-1 in their FA Cup quarter-final, having already eliminated Hull, Newcastle and Norwich (in a replay match) in previous rounds. As to direct matches, Chelsea have gone on to win five consecutive matches against the Saints since a 1-3 loss in October 2015,
Marcos Alonso serves the second of a three-match ban, with Emerson expected to keep his place at left wing-back after an impressive performance last time out. Oliver Giroud is expected to have earned his place in the starting XI and will be supported by Willian and Eden Hazard who were both rested in midweek. Cesc Fabregas and Andreas Christensen also return in the starting lineups. The former will partner Ngolo Kantè in the middle of the park, the latter will join Gary Cahill and Cesar Azpilicueta in the backline trio. Danny Drinkwater remains a doubt due to a groin problem, whilst David Luiz is sidelined due to a knee injury.
Southampton are increasingly looking likely for the drop into the Championship, following another draw against Leicester on Thursday evening. Prior to that, they conceded three goals in each of their three league games under Mark Hughes. Their sole win in their last eight matches came at League One Wigan in FA Cup, having previously beaten Fulham, Watford and West Brom in the competition. As to recent direct encounters, Saints had the stuffing knocked out of them last Saturday, when Chelsea recovered from 2-0 down to win 3-2 at St Mary's.
Jack Stephens serves the third match of a three-game ban, and will be likely replaced by Jan Bednarek. Mario Lemina injured and Sofiane Boufal are both doubts due to illness. As a result Mark Hughes could name the same XI that started. That would see Shane Longs pearheading the attack once again, with Dusan Tadic and James Ward-Prowse tucked behind the Irishman. Cedric Soares and Ryan Bertrand will play as full backs in a 3-4-2-1 system, with Oriol Romeu and Pierre Emile Hojberg in the middle of the park.
