The wait is over for Formula 1 fans and the big question Formula 1 punters are wondering is whether or not anyone can dethrone the dominating reigning champ Lewis Hamilton. Furthermore, the arrival of the ‘halo’ will no doubt provoke endless debate.

Hamilton will be looking to start his campaign with a victory after claiming pole position on Saturday's qualification. He has only triumphed in Melbourne twice before but he appears once again to have the fastest car on the track as the Brit produced a sensational lap to open up a gap of six tenths of a second to Kimi Raikkonen.

The Finnish will share the front row with Hamilton, ahead of Sebastian Vettel, who won his second Australian Grand Prix in 2017. It is the first time in six races Raikkonen has out qualified his German team-mate. Anyway, both Ferrari's drivers were nowhere close to Hamilton and his Mercedes-AMG in qualifying but they usually improve in race.

Red Bull's Max Verstappen qualified fourth ahead of his team-mate Daniel Ricciardo, who is due to serve a three-place grid drop following an infringement in practice on Friday. Ricciardo he is a man to keep an eye on this time around because he has been a very consistent performer when his car has not let him down. The 28-year-old Australian finished in the top six in every race he finished in 2017 and he appeared on the podium in nine of the 14 races he completed.

The big surprise of the timed session was the performance of the Haas cars, as Kevin Magnussen and Romain Grosjean finished sixth and seventh ahead of the Renault duo of Nico Hulkenberg and Carlos Sainz.

It was not a perfect session for Hamilton's Mercedes team after Valtteri Bottas crashed into the wall and out of qualifying at the exit of turn two. Hamilton's team-mate will start from 10th position.

Toro Rosso rookie Pierre Gasly was slowest of the pack and the others out were Sergei Sirotkin of Williams, Charles Leclerc and Marcus Ericsson of Alfa Romeo, and Kiwi Brendon Hartley in the second Toro Rosso.

What about the weather?
It is likely to be drier to raceday on Sunday but rain could still fall. There will be a “passing morning shower” and a 25 per cent chance of rainfall before the cars take to the grid. Changing weather can make any race a bit of a lottery.

Albert Park has been home to some thrilling races in the past. With a couple of DRS zones and 16 varied corners, the Australian Grand Prix has a tendency for drama despite it is considered one of the least-challenging circuits on the calendar due to is fast and undemanding corners. Failed to overtake attempts have led to some spectacular crashes down the years, particularly at Turn 3, which like Turn 1 often sees a bottle-neck on the opening lap.
