MONACO GP BETTING PREVIEW
Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel heads to the Principality as the championship leader but only by six points from Mercedes rival Lewis Hamilton, who triumphed at the Spanish Grand Prix last time out.
The three-time world champion Lewis Hamilton had been struggling with the set-up of his Mercedes throughout practice and is set to start in 13th position on the starting grid, in a race where grid position is all-important. Despite that he looked on course to make the top 10 shootout until Stoffel Vandoorne’s accident forced him to abandon his final flying lap. It has been an abject performance, given that his team-mate Valtteri Bottas finished just 45 thousandths behind pole-sitter Kimi Raikkonen who broke the all-time lap record with a 1:12.296.
The Finnish secured a surprising Pole Position, with his team mate Sebastian Vettel in 2nd position by 0.043 seconds, meaning that Ferrari is the car to beat. Vettel and the Ferrari package have been fantastic so far this season and to top it off, he was blistering in each practice session this week. Ferrari are huge favourites for the Monaco Grand Prix having locked out the front row. Anyway, they have not recorded a victory here since 2001. If you look at the past few editions in Monaco, the last four have all been won by a Mercedes driver (Webber, Rosberg three times and Hamilton in 2016).
Daniel Ricciardo, who took pole for the race last year, had to settle for fifth place after being released from the pits into traffic when it counted in Q3. Ricciardo’s recent track record in Monte Carlo makes for good reading too – he has finished third, fifth and second in the past three years
Jenson Button, who makes a one-off return to Formula One while Fernando Alonso competes in the Indianapolis 500, was impressive after six months away from the tracks in ninth. Anyway, he will start at the back after McLaren incurred a 15-place grid penalty for making an unscheduled engine change.
Special mentions go to Carlos Sainz (Toro Rosso) and Sergio Perez (Force India) who will start in sixth and seventh tomorrow. Both drivers' continue to show their obvious talent on a weekly basis.
Who will win?
The Monte Carlo street circuit is tight and very narrow meaning there are very few opportunities for drivers to overtake during the race, so even though the last two races have been won by a driver that did not start on pole, 11 of the last 13 Monaco Grand Prix winners have started at the very front of the grid.
