ARSENAL vs MANCHESTER CITY PREVIEW
Arsenal were completely outplayed by Manchester City in the League Cup Final last Sunday. The Gunners suffered a 3-0 defeat at Wembley Stadium and the gap in quality between the two sides was extremely evident. Their form is very poor, with four losses in the most recent six outings, including a 2-1 loss to Ostersund in the Europa League last Thursday. However, Arsene Wenger's men have lost just one of their last 20 home matches in the Premier League, where they currently sit 6th in the table. A defeat to City will mean that their best way of qualifying for the Champions League may be by winning this season’s Europa League.
Petr Cech will return between the sticks while Sead Kolasinac could start Thursday’s game after Nacho Monreal, who picked up an injury in Sunday's loss and will miss out here. Aaron Ramsey recovered from injury to start in the 3-0 defeat at Wembley and is expected to retain his starting berth, while Mohamed Elneny could replace Granti Xhaka in the middle of the park. Up front, Henrikh Mhkitaryan will feature from the off, after he missed last time out as he was cup-tied. With Alexandre Lacazette still sidelined, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is sure to lead the line, with Mesu Ozil providing support. Danny Welbeck and Alex Iwobi provide further options.
Man City humiliated Arsenal at Wembley on Sunday afternoon, claiming the first silverware of the season. Pep Guardiola’s men also ran out 3-1 winners in November’s reverse fixture at the Etihad Stadium, meaning they are undefeated in their last 5 matches against Arsenal in all competitions. Prior to the Carabao Cup final, Manchester City trashed FC Basel 4-0 in Switzerland in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 round, but suffred a shocking loss at the hands of Wigan in FA Cup. The Citizens will be in excellent spirit as they could expand the gap at the top of the Premier League table to 16 points. They have won 22 of their last 25 league matches, scoring at least 2 goals in 17 of their last 20 encounters. Their points total of 72 from 27 games is the most ever set by an English top-flight side at this stage of the season.
Raheem Sterling missed Sunday’s cup final but he is expected to play here, replacing Leroy Sanè or Bernardo Silva up front. Gabriel Jesus featured against Arsenal from the bench after recovering from a knee injury. Anywa, Sergio Aguero is expected to spearhead the attack once again. Fernandinho suffered a hamstring injury at Wembley and will be replaced by Fabian Delph or Ilkay Gundogan, with the former also likely to play at left-back. John Stones and Aymeric Laporte will push for a start after only making the bench at the weekend. Benjamin Mendy remains sidelined, but Yaya Toure is a minor doubt due to illness.
