- 1:00 pm: England vs Iran
England vs Iran Betting PreviewThe Three Lions played out an engaging 3-3 draw against Germany in their last UEFA Nations League game but actually they finished the competition winless in six matches and were relegated to League B. Gareth Southgate's men failed to score from open play in the first five matches and were beaten twice by Hungary in that process. The manager seriously risked to be sacked before the start of the World Cup but still deserves plenty of credits for having reached the Euro 2020 final and the 2018 FIFA World Cup semi-final.
Iran sit in 20th in the FIFA World Rankings and are by far the number one Asian nations in that ranking. Led by experienced manager Carlos Queiroz, they have lost just one competitive fixture in three years. The Asian outfit edged Nicaragua to a 1-0 triumph on 10th November but lost 2-0 at the hands of Tunisia in a behind-closed-doors friendly last week. In September they narrowly beat Uruguay 1-0 and drew 1-1 against Senegal.
England (4-2-3-1): Pickford; Trippier, Stones, Maguire, Shaw; Rice, Bellingham; Sterling, Mount, Foden; Kane
Gareth Southgate will play with his usual 4-2-3-1, with Harry Kane leading the line. The likes of Raheem Sterling, Mason Mount and Phil Foden will probably support the Tottenham striker, as james Maddison missed training earlier this week to manage his workload following an injury scare last weekend. Jude Bellingham should get the nod over Kalvin Phillips in the middle of the park, partnering Declan Rice. At right back, Kieran Trippier should be given the nod in Kyle Walker's absence with John Stones and Harry Maguire featuring as centre-backs and Luke Shaw as left-back.
Iran (4-3-3): Beiranvand; Moharrami, Pouraliganji, Hosseini, Mohammedi; Nourollahi, Ezatolahi, Hajsafi; Jahanbakhsh, Taremi, Amiri
Porto's striker Mehdi Taremi, who has scored five goals in five Champions League appearances this season, is ready to shoulder the goalscoring burden. He will be flanked by a familiar name such as Alireza Jahanbakhsh (Feyenoord) and Vahid Amiri, as Bayer Leverkusen striker Sardar Azmoun is still doubtfull following a calf muscle last month. The Middle Eastern nation will also be without Allahyar Sayyadmanesh and Omid Ebrahimi who both missed out on the tournament due to injuries. Brentford's Saman Ghoddos should be content with a place on the bench.
Our England vs Iran Predictions
England have endured a difficult run in the build-up to this tournament and rarely come flying out of the blocks at the World Cup.
Iran are winless in their eight matches against European rivals in the past World Cup editions and have loss six of these matches.
The Three Lions have not won their opening game at a World Cup by more than one goal since 1998, so we back a narrow win (1-0 or 2-1).
Harry Kane will have his eyes on the prize once again in Qatar after winning the Golden Boot four years ago in Russia, and we back Harry Kane to score first.
