Uruguay were disappointing in their opening group match losing 3-1 to Costa Rica although they got an early lead thanks to Cavani’s goal from the penalty spot. Their start is in stark contrast to the 2010 finals when they went through the group stage unbeaten and without conceding.

Maxi Pereira, who was sent off against Costa Rica, is banned for Uruguay. He could be replaced by Álvaro Gonzalez, while another possibility would be Álvaro Pereira coming in at left-back and Martín Cáceres switching over to right-back.Anyway, the biggest news is that the star striker Luis Suarez is fit and he is expected to play against England.

England won many admirers but no points as they went down 2-1 to Italy in the humidity of the Amazon in their group opener. Maybe it was the most encouraging performance in a major tournament for England in the last 10 years. The foursome of Danny Welbek, Sturridge, Rooney, and Raheem Sterling was creative and dangerous against the Azzurri.

Hodgson is unlikely to make major changes for the Uruguay match but much of the debate heading into this clash will centre around the selection of Wayne Rooney. The Manchester United forward was deployed on the left hand side against Italy but could come back in the middle for this game. Steven Gerrard and Daniel Sturridge are both suffering with minor knocks following the loss to Italy, but the Liverpool duo are expected to be available. Oxlade-Chamberlain has been training increasingly intensely, and may be fit enough to make an appearance from the bench here

The history between these teams is extremely even with Uruguay owning four wins, England three and three games ending in draws. The last four meetings between the sides have produced a 2-1 win in favour of both countries and two goalless draws – the first of which being the opening game of the 1966 World Cup in England.
