TOUR DE FRANCE STAGE 3 BETTING PREVIEW The organisers have modelled the stage on that used in the 2008 Tour for the Team Time Trial, the result being a challenging examination including short, steep climbs, tricky descents, and sharp turns. It’s not super technical but it’s the sort of profile where you need to keep your concentration all of the time. The most demanding uphill stretch appears at kilometre 25 when the route climbs at 4% for 1.5 kilometres.
There are just a few teams who will be going for victory here, while the rest will be just trying their damn hardest to not lose a shed load of time for their team leaders to the other GC favourites
BMC and Team Sky have tended to dominate team time trials in the last few years.
The team time trial at June’s Criterium du Dauphiné provided a talking point as Team Sky’s dominance helped pave the way for Geraint Thomas’s overall victory. That was a much flatter and less-demanding course and Chris Froome was not in the line-up that day. In addition to Froome and Geraint Thomas, there's Luke Rowe, Michal Kwiatkowski, Gianni Moscon, and Jonathan Castroviejo all in the mix too.
BMC Racing have had a good 2018 in the discipline, winning at Tirreno-Adriatico and Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana and, more recently, beating Sunweb by over 20 seconds in the Tour de Suisse. Led by Richie Porte, they have a good lineup too with Stefan Kung (Swiss TT champ) and Tejay Van Garderen.
In Bergen, Norway, Team Sunweb powered to victory at the World Championships, although that course was a lot hillier than the Tour de France in Cholet. A lack of preparation for this year's Tour is a worry. Tom Dumoulin is the World Time Trial Champion and will give a huge contribute.
Mitchelton-Scott would have been among the top favorites, but crashes in the first two days have muddied things a bit as Luke Durbridge crashed on Stage 2.
Quick-Step Floors could go well too, as they have some very strong engines in their team, including Bob Jungels (Luxembourg TT champ).
Riders without powerhouse TTT squads — like Romain Bardet (Ag2r La Mondiale) or Dan Martin (UAE Team Emirates) — could ship minutes to the heavier favorites.
LottoNL Jumbo and Bora Hansgrohe are two more teams packed pull of power and quality. LottoNL have Primoz Roglic and Steven Kruijswijk’s as their best time trialist, while Bora Hansgrohe will have extra motivations as Peter Sagan is in yellow.
