TOUR DE FRANCE STAGE 3 BETTING PREVIEW
Stage 3 starts in the Belgian town of Verviers, but ends 212.5km later, in the French town of Longwy. And to welcome the riders into Longwy is a final mile of climbing, averaging just under 6%, up the Cote des Religieuses. With five categorized climbs spread throughout the stage including the first Category 3 ascents of the 2017 Tour de France and that kind of finish, puncheurs are the favorites to win this stage. Peter Sagan, who was extremely quiet yesterrday, is the obvious choice given the way he outstayed Julian Allaphilippe in Cherbourg on a similar finish to this in 2016. His most dangerous opponent is Michael Matthews, one of the most backed rider ahead of this stage, due to his impressive form so far this season.
Other potential winners are Greg van Avermaet and Philippe Gilbert who are both known as great Classics riders which should be of great help looking at the profile of the stage. The former has had a brilliant season, winning nine races this year and currently topping the UCI World Rankings. The latter has shown signs of a return to form, though, with five wins already this year and several other prominent performances.
John Degenkolb is not taking part to bunch sprints, so we expect the German rider to be one of the main contenders in this kind of stages this year.
Other punchers including Michal Kwiatkowski, Diego Ulissi and Tim Wellens will need to distance the likes of both Sagan and Michael Matthews before the final sprint if they want to stand a chance of stage victory.
Outsiders and dark horses?
The Italians Sonny Colbrelli,Fabio Felline and Matteo Trentin could all have a chance to grab a win or a podium finish, considering they are very suited for this kind of finish.
If the last kilometres might not prove too much for the sprinters, Nacer Bouhanni and Marcel Kittel could be in the mix.
Alex Vuillermoz caused an upset when winning Stage Eight on the finish up the Mur-De Bretagne in 2015 and can't be ruled out.
The likes of Michael Albasini, Daniel Martin, Tim Wellens and Jan Bakelandts could be good options in case of runaway.
