TOUR DE FRANCE STAGE 12 BETTING PREVIEW
The longest stage of the Pyrenean stay will be made of an extremely difficult sequence of climbs. The riders are to crest four cols before a steep double-barreled ascent runs the the summit finish in Peyragudes. The will face four intermediate climbs – Côte de Capvern, Col des Ares, Col de Menté and Port de Balès – before they hit the foot of the two-stage ascent to the finish line at kilometre 200. The final climb is the Col de Peyresourde, with 14 kilometres remaining. Actually it is the first climb of a double-barrelled ascent to arrival place Peyragudes. The first part is a 11.7 kilometres ascent with an average gradient of 7.7% before a short drop runs to the foot of a 2.4 kilometres slog at 8.4%
- Km 64.0 – Côte de Capvern 7.7 kilometre-long climb at 3.1% – category 4
- Km 111.5 – Col des Ares (797 m) 7.4 kilometre-long climb at 4.6% – category 2
- Km 139.5 – Col de Menté (1 349 m) 6.9 kilometre-long climb at 8.1% – category 1
- Km 184.0 – Port de Balès (1 755 m) 11.7 kilometre-long climb at 7.7% – category H
- Km 209.5 – Col de Peyresourde (1 569 m) 9.7 kilometre-long climb at 7.8% – category 1
- Km 214.5 – PEYRAGUDES (1 580 m) 2.4 kilometre-long climb at 8.4% – category 2
We should expect a thrilling finale, with GC contenders and stage hunters fighting on the final climbs.
Chris Froome and Team Sky are under real pressure. The Brit is not dominant like the previous years and the loss of Geraint Thomas is a huge blow. Anyway, Froome is improving day by day and could rediscover his usual efficiency on the steepest ascents and also attack on descents.
Fabio Aru (Astana) sits at only 18 seconds down on the defending champion and could use the stage as a springboard to get ahead as the finish suits the punchy Italian. He was the best rider on La Planche des Belle Filles. That was a very different mountain, and came at the end of a much easier day in terms of ascent. Aru will be supported by his team-mate Jakob Fuglsang, one of the best rider of the last mountain stage. Could the Astana duo get the better of Froome and Sky with more coordinated attacks? Anyway, the Dane could struggle because of an injured wrist.
Romain Bardet will enjoy the long descent off Port de Bales, but unfortunately for him the descent off the Peyresourde is almost straight, meaning it will be hard to maintain or increase gaps over the top.
Dan Martin has been prominent in the climbing action this year, but although riding well, he has struggled to keep with the best on the longer ascents. Plus, he was involved in the dramatic Richie Porte's crash but his conditions looked pretty good.
The resurgence of Rigoberto Uran is something else to watch out for as well. The Colombian looked very solid when he won the big mountain stage at Chambery last Sunday and should be in the mix with the other GC contenders.
Nairo Quintana and Alberto Contador, both regarded as more explosive climbers, have shown plenty of signs of weakness so far and are expected to make a do or die attack sooner or later.
Dark horses?
Thibaut Pinot is nearly an hour down on the General Classification and would be left un-chased by the big names if attacking in the final stages.
In case of an early breakaway, pay attention to the likes of Lilian Calmejane, Primoz Roglicm Damiano Caruso, Warren Barguil, Simon Yates, Pierre Rolland, Geroge Bennett, Tony Gallopin, Dan Navarro, Alexis Vuillermoz and Tiesj Benoot
Bookmakers also expected to see a first glimpse of Esteban Chaves in his first Tour de France while Mikel Landa is expected to protect his captain Chris Froome rather to look for a personal glory.
