TOUR DE FRANCE STAGE 4 BETTING PREVIEW
While the race won’t touch any cobblestones, the day’s route features a hilly profile.
In this first phase, the riders will not encounter any real obstacles; however, the terrain is constantly rolling.
The final 40 kilometers feature five categorised climbs which will bring punchy riders into play - three Cat 4 and two Cat 3.
This kind of terrain promises a suspenseful finish, with puncheurs and GC contenders fighting for the stage win.
- Côte Jacques Anquetil (3.6km - 3.5%) - 4th category - 46.1 km to the finish
- Côte de Belbeuf (1.3km - 9.4%) - 3rd category - 27.5 km to the finish
- Côte de Bonsecours (1km - 7.4%) - 4th category - 19.8 km to the finish
- Côte de la Grand’Mare (1.9km - 5.3%) - 4th category - 11.9 km to the finish
- Rampe Saint-Hilaire (900m - 10.9%) - 3rd category - 5.0 km to the finish
Rampe Saint-Hilaire will be the deciding point of the stage, as owards the end of the climb, the gradient ramps up to around 17–18%.
Stage 4 Favourites
Sunday's stage provided a likely script for what might await on Stage 4's punchy finish in Rouen.
Mathieu Van Der Poel is the man to beat while Tadej Pogaçar and Jonas Vingegaard are his closest contenders.
The lost of their sprinter and stage one winner Jasper Philipsen on Monday will be a huge blow for Van Der Poel's Alpecin-Deceuninck team, so team Visma and UAE will try to isolate the Dutchman before the final ascent, where Pogaçar and Vingegaard could have the edge.
Kevin Vauquelin and Matteo Jorgenson ran very well on Sunday, arriving with the best riders on the finish line.
Wout Van Aert was on domestic duties but he would be perfect for this terrain.
Remco Evenepoel is another rider that can perform well on steep gradients, but the Belgian prefers longer climbs.
Primoz Roglic will aim to avoid losing ground, following the wheels of other GC contenders.
Dark horses?
Julian Alaphilippe impressed on Sunday, trying to surprise the favourites with an attack on the final hill. He is not explosive as he was in in his prime, so the Frenchman can only try to anticipate the big guns.
Romain Gregoire and Oscar Onley have also shown good legs, while Thibau Nys is still recovering from his crash on Stage 1 and could run conservatively.
The terrain looks too demanding for Biniam Girmay and other sprinters, while Ben Healy, Aurelien Paret-Peintre, Neilson Powless and Mattias Skjelmose are long-range threats.
Pogaçar's teammates Joao Almeida, Tim Wellens and Jhonatan Narvaez have the potential to win this stage but they will surely support his captain.
