TOUR DE FRANCE STAGE 3 BETTING PREVIEW
Stage 3 features a pan-flat route, meaning a perfect opportunity for pure sprinters is on the cards.
The only ascent of the day comes with around 33km to go, with the category four ascent of Mont Cassel (2.3km at 3.8%), but its shallow gradients are unlikely to put any riders into difficulty.
Anyway, the potential for crosswinds and echelons to form in the final 35km could spoil their day but the approach towards the finish in Dunkerque means that the riders are unlikely to be exposed to any crosswinds in the run-in.
Stage 3 Favourites
Jasper Philipsen is the clear favorite in any potential bunch sprint. The Belgian has won the opening stage in impressive fashion and 10 Tour De france stages overall. With Mathieu van der Poel leading him out, Philipsen will be tough to beat.
Tim Merlier was not involved in the first bunch sprint last Saturday, as he lost ground due to an echeleno. He won two stage in the Baloise Belgium Tour last month.
Jonathan Milan was the fastest sprinter in the intermediate sprint on Stage 1 but was not in the leading group to compete for the Stage win. The Italian has won two stage at the Tirreno-Adriatico in March and the second stage of the Criterium du Dauphinè last month.
With many sprinters our of the picture on Saturday, Biniam Girmay profited to record a 2nd place in the opening stage. Anyway, in normal conditions we can't see the Intermarchè-Wanty rider to compete for the podium.
Dylan Groenewegen is a genuine contender. He has one of the strongest leadouts of the Tour and has been in good form this season, recently winning two stages at the Tour of Slovenia.

Any possible surprise?
Kaden Groves has been one of the strongest sprinters at this year's Giro d'Italia, winning a stage and finishing runner-up twice, including in the final stage in Rome. He is yet to win a stage at the Tour de France, and will probably have another winless Tour as he will support his team-mate Philipsen this year.
Arnaud De Lie would normally considered a strong contender in this kind of sprint, but the Lotto's sprinter has failed to win since February, with a 15th place his best result at the recent Tour De Suisse.
The route will also suit Wout Van Aert but there is the possibility that the Belgian is not yet going to try and contest stage wins. Team Red Bull-Bora has two good sprinters such as Jordi Meeus and Danny Van Poppel while team Arkea's main hope will be Arnaud Demare.
Cees Bol, Pavel Bittner, Phil Bauhaus and Bryan Coquard are the other riders that will fight for a Top 10 placement.
