Their spirits will have been boosted by their rampant 3-0 derby win over Manchester United on Sunday. City have failed to win the opening game of the last two Champions League editions, drawing both against Feyenoord in 2023 and Inter Milan in 2024. Pep Guardiola's men were disappointing in the UEFA Champions League last season, finishing a 22nd of 36 in the league phase and scraping through to the play-off round on goal difference. Then, the Cityzens suffered home and away defeats to Real Madrid (6-3 aggregate on aggregate).
Napoli come into the game in fine form, having won all three Serie A games so far. Antonio Conte's men, who are unbeaten since last February, have opened the season with a 2-0 victory at Sassuolo, then they narrowly beat Cagliari 1-0 at home and eased past Fiorentina last weekend (3-1 in Florence). Their title success last year was achieved without the hindrance of any European commitments. So, it will be interesting to see how the team manage increased number of matches this term.
