Manchester City v Liverpool betting preview

Less than a month ago Man City were unbeaten in the league. They now trail the Reds by 7 points

Manchester City find themselves 7 points behind Liverpool in the Premier League standings, after a disappointing end to 2018 in which they lost three times in December. The Citizens were beaten by Chelsea (2-0) at the beginning of the month and suffered back-to-back defeats against Crystal Palace (2-3) and Leicester (2-1) between 22nd December and Boxing Day. They finally back to winning ways last Sunday by defeating Southampton 3-1 at St.Mary's. The current champions have failed to keep a clean sheet in the last 10 outings in all competitions - their longest run since February 2015. Last season City crushed Liverpool 5-0 in the league game in Manchester but Liverpool were 4-3 winners in the return at Anfield.

Kevin De Bruyne and Ilkay Gundogan are both doubtful while Fabian Delph is still banned. Pep Guardiola may opt to stick with the midfield trio of David Silva, Bernardo Silva and Fernandinho. Up front, Sergio Aguero will lead the line, flanked by Raheem Sterling and Leroy Sanè, as the latter is expected to get the nod over Riyad Mahrez. Gabriel Jesus looks likely to be benched. John Stones or Nicolas Otamendi will likely return at centre-back in place of Vincent Kompany, with Danilo likely to replace Oleksandr Zinchenko at left back.

Liverpool are so far proving every bit as dominant as City were last term. They warmed up for their trip to the Etihad in style on Saturday with a 5-1 demolition of Arsenal at Anfield Road, their 9th domestic victory in a row. The Reds are rock solid at the back, having equalledthe record for fewest goals conceded after 20 games of a top-flight season in England with just 8 goals conceded. As to direct encounters, are undefeated in 11 of their last 12 matches against Man City in all competitions. The reverse encounter this season failed to live up to its billing as the teams played out a 0-0 draw at Anfield on 7th October.

The visitors are still without Joel Matip and Joe Gomez, but James Milner could be fit to return from a slight hamstring injury. Jordan Henderson will hope to return to the side after being dropped last time out. He should join Georginio Wijnaldum and Fabinho in the middle of the park, with Naby Keita and Xherdan Shaqiri poviding further options. No changes are expected up front while the usual front trio Salah-Manè-Firmino will try to exploit Man City's defensive woes. The likes of Trent Alexander-Arnold, Dejan Lovren, Virgil Van Dijk and Andrew Robertson will form the four man backline.
