MANCHESTER UTD vs SOUTHAMPTON BETTING PREVIEW
Manchester UTD have seen their title challenge fade in recent weeks, having taken just two points from their Premier League fixtures against Leicester and Burnley respectively. As a result, they trail league leaders Manchester City by a whopping 15 points. Plus, they suffered a troubled 2-1 loss at Bristol City in League Cup seen last week. The Red Devils have eked out a 1-0 victory at St Mary's earlier in the season, but Southampton have won two of their last three visits to Old Trafford.
Victor Lindelof should deputise alongside Phil Jones, with Chris Smalling and Eric Bailly ruled out, while Matteo Darmian will be assessed before the game. Antonio Valencia remains a major doubt, so Ashley Young and Daley Blind should start as full backs with Macos Rojo back up option. Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic look poised to retain their starts at the base of midfield in the 4-2-3-1 formation, with Jesse Lingard, Juan Mata and Marcus Rashford supporting Romelu Lukaku upfront. Zlatan Ibrahimovic is expected to drop to the bench while ANthony Martial is not 100% fit.
Southampton were torn apart by Tottenham at Wembley on Boxing Day (5-2), a result that extended their winless record to seven games. They have picked up just three points in that period - earning draws against Bournemouth, Huddersfield and Arsenal. The Saints currently sit 14th in the top flight, only two points above the relegation zone. Furthermore, they have sold defensive skipper Virgil Van Dijk to Liverpool for the record-breaking £75m fee. The Saints' record against top-half teams is W1 D1 L8 and the victory came against Everton when David Unsworth was caretaker manager.
Mauricio Pellegrino opted for more of a 4-1-4-1 system last time out, and he may stick with the same formation, making Oriol Romeu a likely starter in the defensive midfield role. Charlie Austin misses out due to an injury that is set to keep him sidelined for several months. He will be replaced by Manolo Gabbiadini in attack, with Shane Long viable alternative. As offensive midfielders, James Ward-Prowse and Dusan Tadic are also pushing for starts, with Nathan Redmond’s berth appearing the most at risk. Mario Lemina and Sofiane Boufal should retain their starting berth. In defense, Maya Yoshida and Wesley Hoedt should form the centre-back partnership once again while Jeremy Pied and Matt Targett should feature from the off as full backs givent that Ryan Bertand and Cedric Soares are missing through injury.
