Who Will Be Top Jockey At The Cheltenham Festival 2020?
- Written by David Bet
This year there are a number of contenders fighting for the honour, and all are expected a solid number of race wins across the festival. In this article you’ll find the main contenders to be named the Cheltenham Festival 2020 top jockey…
Cheltenham Top Jockey Betting Tips
Paul Townend - 2/1
With Ruby Walsh missing from the festival, Paul Townend is favourite with the bookmakers to win the prize. Most are pricing him around 2/1 with him expected to have the pick of Willie Mullins’ stable. It’s likely he’ll ride Al Boum Photo, last year’s Gold Cup winner and favourite for this year, as well as Benie Des Dieux who Mullins has very high hopes for.
It seems inevitable that Townend will follow on from Walsh’s success following retirement and no matter who he’s riding, the horse will be worth a punt.
Davy Russell - 10/3
Davy Russell is expected to ride Presenting Percy who is hotly tipped for a good run in the Gold Cup. Russell has had plenty of solid rides at Cheltenham and it’s no surprise to see him among the favourites to be named top jockey. He’ll be predominantly riding Gordon Elliott horses and will likely ride Envoi Allen who is almost certain to be a winner according to the majority of pundits around.
Rachael Blackmore - 6/1
Blackmore’s career is going from strength to strength and it’s expected to be a landmark year for her at Cheltenham. She’s expected to ride for Henry De Bromhead stable, and plenty of eyes will be on her as she saddles up. Captain Guinness will be her first ride of the festival, while she will also ride Notebook who is favourite to succeed in the Arkle.
Honeysuckle will be a big ride for her in either the Champion Hurdle or Mares Hurdle and it would be absolutely huge for the sport if she lifted the top jockey crown come the end of Friday.
Barry Geraghty - 5/1
Geraghty has 38 Cheltenham winners to his name and will undoubtedly add to that tally in 2020.He won twice last year and will have the selection of JP McManus’ horses.
Sporting John will be his ride to watch though, and is worth a punt after a terrific run with Geraghty at Ascot just a few weeks ago.
Best of the Rest
2019 saw a real split in winners, and the field is strong for the top jockey award. As well as those above, Nico De Boinville poses a good chance at 8/1 with most bookmakers, while Robbie Power is priced at 10/1 and worth an outside shot.Mark Walsh and Patrick Mullins are both at 16/1, although are no way near as likely to take the prize in comparison to the likes of Townend and Geraghty.
