TOUR DE FRANCE STAGE 2 BETTING PREVIEW
The second stage of this year’s Tour de France is a one for sprinters or at least that is the way it looks on the paper. From Dusseldorf the riders head for Liege in Belgium. There two Cat 4 climbs, one very early and the other about 20kms from the finish.
Marcel Kittel is the clear favourite to win as he has already recorded 8 stage wins and an overall race win (Tour of Dubai). The German also has the best lead out train in the peloton to call on. Obviously, with the final sprint occurring on the flat Boulevard de la Sauveniere, the advantage could also fall on the rider with the best lead out team.
Next up, there is Arnaud Demare. He won the French Road Race Championship last weekend by easily beating Nacer Bouhanni in the sprint finish, recording his 8th seasonal success, including a stage at Paris-Nice and the recent Dauphine.
The third favourite is Dylan Groenewegen, who has recorded 5 wins this season – the best probably being the two in the Tour of Norway. He crashed in the ITT but looked 100% fit on the finish line.
Fast sprinters such as André Greipel (Lotto Soudal) and 30-stage winner Mark Cavendish (Dimension Data) can never be discounted even after recently recovering from illness. The German has only won a stage at the Giro d'Italia while the Brit, who won 4 stages last year, have recorded no real results to look at to judge his form coming here.
Peter Sagan showed his good form in the opening stage time trial and is almost guaranteed to be in contention in the final stages.
John Degenkolb, Sonny Colbrelli and Alexander Kristoff don't look fast enough to grab a podium while Nacer Bouhanni won one of the sprint stages at the Tour de Yorkshire recently and was subsequently 3rd and 5th on 2 of the Dauphine stages and could be the dark horse of this stage.
