Stage 16 of Tour de France takes place on Monday and it's a “flat” day with only one categorised climb in the 209km from Moirans En-Montagne to Berne, Switzerland. TOUR DE FRANCE STAGE 16 BETTING PREVIEW The riders are greeted by the only categorised climb of the day at 26km left, the Côte de Mühleberg. It’s only 1.2km at 4.8%, so it will not create too many damages. Anyway the final 5kms are undulating, like the rest of the stage, and some of the streets are cobbled.
A fast descent on technical roads with 4km to go leads to 1000m of flat roads and two small climbs. The first one is cobbled averages 7% over 250m, is very technical and ends at the 2km mark. 250m of flats will then precede a 600m climb that averages 6.5%. The top comes with 1.1km to go and from there it is a long, straight, 6m wide road all the way to the finish.
It will be a difficult stage for a pure sprinter to win. Hence, we expect a winning breakaway or a puncheur to win the stage. It’s also a perfect stage for Classics riders like Tinkoff’s Peter Sagan, BMC’s Greg Van Avermaet, and Giant-Alpecin’s John Degenkolb to rule the day.
Peter Sagan, of course, is the favorite number one. He could decide to attack in the final small climbs or save energies for the sprint.
John Degenkolb should be in the mix. His recent performance in the last sprint was extremely positive, and if he's back in form, he's going to be dangerous on this finish.
Greg Van Avermaet will try to upset other contenders playing his cards before the final sprint while Julian Alaphilippe should be a nit tired after a whole attacking day on Sunday's stage.
Alexander Kristoff will be a tough rival. He won the bunch sprint for fourth in the windy stage 11 and he was a strong seconds in the slow stage 14.
Bryan Coquard would have preferred if the finish came at the top of the final climb as he's an excellent finisher on uphill sprints. His big issue so far has been the positioning.
Michael Matthews is an outstanding climber so he should easily be up there but the stage is probably a bit too easy for him to beat the likes of Sagan, Kristoff and Coquard.
Marcel Kittel has the power to make the short climbs to the top with the best but it may cost him too much strength and energy. Mark Cavendish is suffering more than usual in the mountains while Andre Greipel is much stronger on these clims but he looks completely out of form.
Sondre Holst Enger,Christophe Laporte, Jasper Stuyven and Dylan Groenewegen are probably not fast enough to win.
Local hero Fabian Cancellara will no doubt give it a go. Another Swiss rider, Michael Albasini, were very impressive up the cobbled climb at the end of Liege and could not be ruled out.
Other dark horses that deserve to be mentioned are Tony Gallopin, Daryl Impey, Edvald Boasson Hagen, Stephen Cummings and Samuel Domoulin.
