MANCHESTER CITY v LIVERPOOL BETTING PREVIEW
Manchester City were favourites for the title at the start of the season, but their opening three performances have been far from convincing. Anyway, they have collected 7 points so far, winning 2-0 at Brighton in the opening round, drawing 1-1 at home against Everton and beating 2-1 Bournemouth last time out with a last-gasp winner scored by Raheem Sterling at the Vitality Stadium. It’s certainly not been the domination that Pep Guardiola will have wanted from his team, and after spending around £200 million this summer the board are probably expecting more as well. In terms of direct encounters, both teams have scored in 10 of the last 12 matches, including the last five at the Etihad.Vincent Kompany picked up a knock while on international duty with Belgium and will not be available. As a result, John Stones should come into the side alongside Nicolas Otamendi in central defence. Kyle Walker is available again following his one-match ban, and could replace Danilo at right-back. Benjamin Mendy should keep his place at left-back. Raheem Sterling is banned after he was sent off before the international break. Gabriel Jesus is favourite over Sergio Aguero up front, while the four offensive midfielders of the 4-1-4-1 formation should be Bernardo Silva, David Silva, Kevin De Bruyne and Leroy Sanè, with Fernandinho behind their shoulders. Ilkay Gundogan continues to step up his recovery from a serious knee injury but lacks match fitness and is unlikely to feature.
Liverpool have enjoyed a bright start to the season, taking seven points from their opening three league games and securing the Champions League partecipation through the play-offs courtesy of a 6-3 aggregate win over Hoffenheim. They are fresh off the back of a 4-0 demolition of Arsenal at Anfield Road. Prior to that, the Reds settled for a point from that six-goal thriller at Watford in first gameweek, and put their first win on the board as they battles past Crystal Palace a week later. Last season the Reds ran out 1-0 winners at home while holding City to a 1-1 draw at the Etihad Stadium in the return meeting, and they have now won five of the last eight encounters with the Citizens, losing on only two occasions.
Philippe Coutinho, who failed to secure a move away from Liverpool, will not be included in the squad who will face Manchester City. The likes of Jordan Henderson, Emre Can and Georginio Wijnaldum are likely to continue in central midfield. New signing Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain from Arsenal will start on bench. Mo Salah should again start alongside Firmino and Sadio Mane in attack, with Daniel Sturridge the main alternative. In defense, Joel Matip and Dejan Lovren should start in central defence, with Alberto Moreno and Trent Alexander-Arnold perhaps getting the nod over Andrew Robertson, Joe Gomez and James Milner. The likes of Nathaniel Clyne and Adam Lallana remain out.
