TOUR DE FRANCE STAGE 19 BETTING PREVIEW
With five-time stage winner Marcel Kittel abandoning the race after a dramatic crash on Stage 17, Stage 19 presents the remaining sprinters with a key opportunity of grabbing a stage win before the final showdown on the Champs-Élysées. Anyway, heading towards the coast, with numerous changes of direction, the peloton will be vulnerable to crosswinds. At the time of writing, the forecast is for scattered thunderstorms with gusting winds, so any rider who was hoping for a quiet day may be disappointed. Two Category 3 climbs come early in the 222.5km-stage, which should give a breakaway one last chance to escape in search of a stage victory. The Col du Pointu, the final cat-three climb of the stage and indeed the race, comes 45km from the line. From there it’s a mainly downhill ride to the finish in Salon de Provence.
With Marcel Kittel, Peter Sagan, Aranud Demare, Mark Cavendish all gone and Team Sunweb’s Michael Matthews comfortably in control of the green jersey, we expect other sprinters' teams (Lotto-Soudal, Katusha and Cofidis) to chase the main breakaway.
In fact, the likes of Andre Greipel, Alexander Kristoff and Nacer Bouhanni are yet to win a stage and this could be their biggest chance to do it.
This trio should pay attention to Edwald Boasson Hagen and Dylan Groenewegen, who have narrowly missed the stage victory so far, finishing runners-up to Kittel many times.
Other possible contenders are Sonny Colbrelli, John Degenkolb, Rudiger Selig, Davide Cimolai and Ben Swift.
If a breakaway is to be successful, look to specialists such as Tony Martin, Greg Van Avermaet, Steve Cummings, Thomas De Gendt, Jan Bakelants, Oliver Naesen and Tony Gallopin to try and initiate the winning move.
Dark horses?
Fabio Sabatini could take part in the bunch sprint given that his captain Marcel Kittel has abandoned the race. Daniele Bennati, Zdenek Stybar and Daryl Impey could try to escape in the last kilometer.
