Tour De France Stage, a long 218km route from Carcassonne to Bagnères-de-Luchon, is the first of three days in the Pyrenees. The stage winner is going to be a climber that can descend. TOUR DE FRANCE STAGE 16 BETTING PREVIEW 

Stage 16 starts gradually with two Category 4 climbs, Côte de Fanjeaux (2.4 kilometres at 4.9%) and Côte de Pamiers (2.3 kilometres at 5.8%). After the 130 km mark there are three climbs in just over 70 kilometres that include a pass into Spain as well.

The three ascents are the Col de Portet d’Aspet (5.4 kilometres at 7.1%), the Col de Menté (6.9 kilometres at 8.1%), the Col du Portillon (8.3 kilometres at 7,1%) before a 10.5 km descent towards the finish line. The descent into Bagnères-de-Luchon was set to be difficult even in the dry but it’s a treacherous danger point in what will likely be wet conditions. The last kilometre is played out on the flat.

The King of the Mountains battle between Julian Alaphilippe and Warren Barguil, so we expect both riders to make the break. Both are darevil descenders, so they have good chances to win the stage.

As for the GC battle, Team Sky will most likely ride defensively. The British team will be happy to let a big non threatening break but we expect Chris Froome to attack and the yellow jersey Geraint Thomas chasing all the rider who will try to keep the pace of his captain.

Tom Dumoulin could be the surprise package of this stage. The Dutchman has proved to be one of the best climbers of the Tour and already distanced the GC group in the Stage 11 penultimate climb descent.



Primoz Roglic and Steven Kruijswijk (fourth and seventh in the overall standings respectively) are proving unafraid to attack the Sky team, so they can be among the first riders to attack on the final climb, as well as Daniel Martin.

AG2R’s Romain Bardet and Movistar’s Mikel Landa have been below par so far, so they will probably lose ground on the Col du Portillon and will not have the chance to attack on descent.

Movistar could also try to make a winning strategy by attacking from far out with Alejandro Valverde - to weaken the Sky train who has already lost Gianni Moscon - and Nairo Quintana on the final ascent.

Other candidates for the stage win are out-of-contention GC riders such as BORA-Hansgrohe’s Rafal Majka, Trek-Segafredo’s Bauke Mollema, and Mitchelton-Scott’s Adam Yates.

In case of winning breakaway, other familiar names should be involved - Domenico Pozzovivo, Ion and Gorka Izagirre, Marc Soler, Lilian Calmejane, Thomas De Gendt, Dani Navarro, Damiano Caruso and Omar Fraile.

Spanish riders could be extra motivated as the race heads through their native soil.
