Avenue Cavendish’ is one of those finish straights that’s ideally suited to a contest between the peloton’s most renowned thoroughbreds.

Jonathan Milan, who finished a close 2nd to Tim Merlier in Stage 3, finally was able to break through for his first victory on the biggest stage in cycling. The Italian up the first stage victory for Italy since Vincenzo Nibali won on stage 20 in 2019.

Wout Van Aert impressed with second place in Laval and might try to go one better before returning to his support role behind Visma-Lease a Bike leader Jonas Vingegaard.

Kaden Groves, Pascal Ackerman and Arnaud De Lie finished just the top duo on Saturday and will also renew their Top 3 ambitions in Stage 9. Among them,  Kaden Groves will be a little above the rest, specially as it does seem he'll have a fully dedicated leadout

An untimely mechanical problem meant stage three winner Tim Merlier struggled to have any real say in Saturday's sprint but the Belgian, who won Stage 3 last week, will be out for revenge.

Biniam Girmay was not involved in the bunch sprint on Saturday but will try to earn points in the fight for the green jersey.

Jordi Meeus is struggling at this Tour and team BORA could decide to promote Danny Van Poppel as first-choice sprinter.
