Thiem has beaten Nadal at Madrid last monthAfter 2 consecutive years in which his French Open campaign ended in the semifinals, Dominic Thiem has finally made it to the next level. The Austrian has beaten Italy's Marco Cecchinato in the semifinals 7-5, 7-6 (12-10), 6-1. Prior to that he beat Ilya Ivashka in straight sets in the first round, and conceded one set in all his following matches - against Stefanos Tsitsipas, Matteo Berrettini and Kei Nishikori. Thiem was flawles against Alexander Zverev in the quarter finals, but the Germans was clearly not 100% fit.
Thiem has an impressive range of shots, including a one-handed backhand he leans on heavily, but he lacks the power and ball-striking efficiency to earn the crucial breaks. The Austrian is also being buoyed up by the fact that he beat Nadal in their last encounter. That was in the last 8 round of the Madrid Masters (clay) last month, when Thiem took down the Spaniard 7-5, 6-3.
- R1: 6-2 6-4 6-1 Ivashka
- R2: 6-2 2-6 6-4 6-4 Tsitsipas
- R3: 6-3 6-7 6-3 6-2 Berrettini
