TOUR DE FRANCE STAGE 19 BETTING PREVIEW
With only an individual time trial and then the sprinters’ showdown in Paris to follow, Friday’s Pyrenean finale is the last chance for the climbers to change the General Classification. The stage begins in Lourdes and hits two Category 4 climbs before the Intermediate Sprint in Sarrancolin. Things then get much harder with as 12km of climbing will take the remaining riders up the category one Col d’Aspin (with an average gradient of 6.5%).
But it is merely the apéritif to the full course meal of climbing that is the Tourmalet (17.1km at 7.3%), the Col des Borders (8.6km at 5.8%), the uncategorized Col du Soulor and finally the Col d'Aubisque (16.6km at 4.9%), before the long descent to the finish line in Laruns.
Geraint Thomas heads into the final three stages with a two-minute buffer but knows Friday’s 200km stage 19 will not be so calm. He has shown no weaknesses so far and clearly have legs and power to win his third TDF stage this year.
Chris Froome lost nearly a minute in the finale of stage 17 and pledged his loyal service to his team-mate, so we don't expect Froomey to win the stage.
Tom Dumoulin still poses a threat to Thomas, considering how well he is expected to perform in the stage 20 time trial. His priority will be to remain close to the yellow jersey and keep alive his winning hopes.
Primoz Roglic is another good time-trialist but he needs to gain time on his closes rivals before the final ITT in order to make the podium. He can count on his team-mate Steven Kruijswijk, so we expect the Lotto-NL Jumbo duo to attack before the final ascent.
Team Movistar is likely to make a fast pace since the early stages. Mikel Landa said on Thursday the Spanish squad would look to put in a long-range attack on Friday, so we expect him and Alejandro Valverde to prepare the attack of Nairo Quintana, who brilliantly won stage 17 but hit the deck in a peloton crash on Stage 18.
Movistar also will want to protect their lead in the team classification. If Bahrain-Merida send several riders into the breakaway, Movistar will have to cover that move.
Daniel Martin is not a threat for the top 3 anymore so he will be in the mix for sure. Anyway, it's worth remembering that his best performances have tended to come on shorter.
Adam Yates, Romain Bardet, Bob Jungels and Rafal Majka have all had indifferent races so far and will be looking to rescue some glory in the closing days.
Of course, a breakaway also has good possibilities to be successful.
Warren Barguil said he targeted this stage but his form has been pretty poor so far. Bauke Mollema, Julian Alaphilippe and Tanel Kangert have been breakaway fixtures on the past few mountain stages and will certainly be on the attack again.
The likes of Mikel Nieve, Damiano Caruso, Jacob Fuglsang, Ion Izagirre, Domenico Pozzovivo and Omar Fraile are the dark horses we fancy on Friday.
