RUSSIA vs ARGENTINA BETTING PREVIEW
Russia have failed to make an impact at this year's Confederations Cup which they also hosted and are not expected to shine next summer. Their last showing at a major championship saw them knocked out at the group stage of the European Championship in 2016 with two defeats and a draw. Russia have conceded three goals in their last two games against much less dangerous opponents (beating Korea Republic 4-2 and held to a 1-1 draw by Iran in early October). Anyway, they have also earned good draws against Chile in June (1-1) and Belgium (3-3) back in March.
Striker Artem Dzyuba is still missing for the hosts and Aleksandr Kokorin and Fedor Smolov will spearhead the attack as consequence. Yuri Zhirkov and Igor Smolnikov are expected to play as wing backs in a 3-5-2 system, with Denis Glushakov and Aleksandr Golovin anchoring the midfield. Alan Dzagoev will support the attacking duo while Viktor Vasi, Fyodor Kudryashov and Roman Neustadter will feature from the off in defense. Spartak highly-rated midfielder Aleksandr Samedov has been dropped from the squad.
Argentina scraped into the 2018 World Cup, as they qualified from the CONMEBOL group after beating 3-1 Ecuador (away from home) in the last qualification match, with three goals from Lionel Messi leaving Colombia, Peru, Chile, and Paraguay just points behind them on South America Qualifiers table. The Argentinians lacked their usual clinical edge, scoring just 19 goals in their 18 qualification matches, compared to Brazil's 41.
Mauro Icardi has been forced out of Argentina's squad because of a knee injury and as a result Sergio Aguero is favourite over Diego Benedetto and Paulo Dybala to complete the front trio alongside Leo Messi and Angel Di Maria. Diego Perotti and Eduardo Salvio may provide the width, while Enzo Perez and Ever Banega should start in the middle of the park since Marcos Acuña and Lucas Biglia are out through injury. In defense, Gabriel Mercado has withdrawn from the squad due to injury leaving Nicolas Otamendi, Javier Mascherano and Emmanuel Mammana forming the three man backline.
