Chelsea vs Villarreal Betting Preview
Chelsea have the chance of clinching another trophy ahead of the start of the new season. Former Dortmund and PSG manager Thomas Tuchel, who arrived at Stamford Bridge midway through last term, led the Blues to a Champions League triumph in May. They beat Manchester City 1-0 in the final, with Kai Havertz hitting the target. Results have been encouraging in warm-up friendlies with three consecutive wins over Peterborough (6-1), Bourhemouth (2-1) and Arsenal (2-1). A statistical fact: the Champions League winners have won this fixture in seven of the last eight seasons.
Villarreal secured their Super Cup shot by winning the Europa League after pulling an upset over Manchester United in the final. The Spanish outfit beat the Red Devils on penalty shootouts after the match ended 1-1 after extra-time. As to pre-season friendlies, the "Yellow Submarines" have played four games so far. They started with a 3-2 loss to Valencia, followed up with two draws against Lyon (2-2) and Levante (0-0), and suffered a narrow defeat at Marseille (2-1). Villarreal are unbeaten in their last 15 games in European competition (W12 D3), including the last three against English oppositions (two against Arsenal in the Europa League semifinal and the final against Man UTD).
Chelsea (4-2-3-1): Mendy; Azpilicueta, Zouma, Rudiger, Chilwell; Kantè, Kovacic; Mount, Werner, Pulisic; Havertz
Players such as Olivier Giroud, Fikayo Tomori and Willy Caballero have left while Danny Drinkwater should leave this week. Forward tammy Abraham may no longer have a place at the club as the Blues are signing Romelu Lukaku from Inter Milan for a £97.5m fee. The Belgian international could also be available for selection, but we don't expect him to start. Kai Havertz, Christian Pulisic, Timo Werner and Mason Mount should form the front quartet, with N'Golo Kantè and Mateo Kovacic anchoring the midfield. Hakim Ziyech and Ruben Loftus-Cheek provide further options, since Jorginho has few training sessions under his belt. At the back, Thiago Silva should not be risked, so Kurt Zouma is likely to flank Antonio Rudiger at the heart of the four man backline.
Villarreal (4-3-3): Asenjo; Gaspar, Raul Albiol, Foyth, A.Moreno; Capoue, Morlanes, Trigueros; Pino, G.Moreno, Dia
Villarreal should be without the excellent Dani Parejo, due to injury, and Pau Torres, due to the Olympics. Furthermore, the likes of Gero Rulli, Etienne Capoue, Vicente Iborra, Francis Coquelin, Moi Gomez, Samuel Chukwueze, and Paco Alcacer are major doubts while striker Gerard Moreno can't be 100% fit as he recently returned to training ground.
Our Chelsea vs Villarreal Predictions
Chelsea may not have all their players up to full speed but Villarreal have a lot of players that have resumed training only in the last ten days. The Spanish outfit lack star quality but always work incredibly hard and are expected to provide a stern test here. The presence of Romelu Lukaku could be a huge boost for the Londoners, but regardless of it Chelsea should get the nod over Villarreal. A 1-0 scoreline is our pick in the Correct Score market as we expect an Under 2.5 goals match.
