PORTO v ROMA BETTING PREVIEW
Porto started their the Portuguese Primeira Liga season with an emphatic 3-1 away victory over Rio Ave, a result which made it five wins, two draws, and one defeat since the end of last season. The Dragoes finished a full 13 points back from second place Sporting Lisbon and 15 points back from champions Benfica in the league last term, and sacked three different managers – Julen Lopetegui, Rui Barros and José Peseiro – by the season’s end. Nuno Espirito Santo, who made way at Valencia last season for Gary Neville’s short and ill-fated reign, has taken over as the Dragons’ coach this summer and while he did not set the world alight in Spain, his record in Portugal with Rio Ave was very good.
The Dragoes have this summer signed the former Inter Milan left back Alex Telles, striker Laurent Depoitre from Gent and Joao Teixeira from Liverpool. Only the former is likely to start the match. Young striker Andre Silva has been in excellent form during the pre-season and is expected to lead the line while Jesus Corona, Andrè and Otavio will start as offensive midfielders. The likes of Danilo Pereira and Hector Herrera will protect the defense.
Roma have been getting busy with many friendly, in which they have produced some nice performances, despite the loss of Miralem Pjanic to Juventus. Attacking midfielder Gerson has moved permanently to Roma, whilst Mohamed Salah, Edin Dzeko and Stephan El Shaarawy have joined on a permanent basis as well. Federico Fazio, Juan Jesus, Wojciech Szczesny, Mario Rui and Thomas Vermaelen have been all signed on loan for this season.
Dutch midfielder Kevin Strootman in completely fit and will start the match in midfield alongside Daniele De Rossi and Radja Nainggolan. Goalkeepers Wojciech Szczesny and Alisson are in contention for a starting berth between the posts while Edin Dzeko, Diego Perotti and Mohamed Salah will lead the line. Defenders Antonio Rudiger and Mario Rui are put through injury while new signing Bruno Peres have not been included in time in the UEFA list.
The Portuguese outfit have been beaten in just one of their last 10 Champions League ties on home turf - beating Bayern Munich, Chelsea and Basel last season - while Roma have failed to win any of their last nine Champions League ties on their travels.
