USA vs Wales Betting Preview
USA missed out in 2018 after seven straight appearances in the World Cup and arrives in Qatar with the youngest teams in the competition. After winning the Gold Cup in 2021, the US Men's soccer team has had mixed fortunes in 2022. They finished third in North American World Cup qualifying - behind Canada and Mexico - to book their spot in Qatar. The Americans are not enjoying a great moment of form as they enter this game on the back of three games without success. They only managed to draw 0-0 against Saudi Arabia - a team with a lot of fringe players - last time out.
The Welsh haven't played in the World Cup since 1958, 64 years ago, but they can surely look back on strong showings in the two recent European Championships for confidence. Robert Page’s side beat Austria 2-1 and Ukraine 1-0 to secure their place at the FIFA World Cup via play-offs last June. They have since lost four of their next five matches, nailing only a 1-1 draw against Belgium. To be fair to the Welsh they have had very tough opponents in these games with the Netherlands, Belgium and Poland making up the opposition.
These two teams have only met twice before, both in friendlies. Landon Donovan and Eddie Lewis scored in a win for the US in 2003 before a 0-0 draw two years ago.
Best Odds
UK betting sites can't split the two teams. USA are priced 7/5 to win the match (best odds at SpreadEx). Wales are 27/11 with Vbet, while the draw is priced at 21/10 (with Betfred). Hence, the bookies are expecting a tight clash at Ar-Rayyan Stadium.
Probable Line-Ups
USA (4-3-3): Turner; Dest, Zimmerman, Long, A. Robinson; Adams, McKennie, Aaronson; Reyna, Ferreira, Pulisic
Christian Pulisic and Gio Reyna will surely start up front, while FC Dallas forward Jesus Ferreira could be entrusted to lead the line in a 4-3-3 setup. Timothy Weah provides a further option. Weston McKennie has not featured for Juventus since October, but he should be fit in time to feature from the start in midfield here, alongside Leeds UTD's Branden Aaronson and Tyler Adams.
Wales (3-4-3): Hennessey; Ampadu, Rodon, B. Davies; N Williams; Morrell, Ramsey, Roberts; Bale, Moore, James
Gareth Bale revealed earlier in the week that he is ready and prepared to play 90 minutes while Joe Allen has been ruled out of the game with a hamstring injury. Kieffer Moore and Dan James will partner the former Tottenham striker in attack while Nottingham Forest's Brennan Johnson will play at some stage. Joe Morrell will replace Allen in the Middle of the park. Connor Roberts and Neco Williams will be the starting wing backs in a 3-4-3 system.
USA v Wales Predictions
We expect a very levelled game. While the US might have more talent on their squad, they showed some signs of weakness at the back.
On the other side, the Welsh play much better as a unit. Despite that, they have kept just one clean sheet in their last 11 games.
As a consequence, we expect a draw with both teams to score. The scoreline could be 1-1 or 2-2.
We also back Christian Pulisic as anytime goalscorer. The Chelsea winger is USA's penalty taker and Wales often concede penalties to their opponents.
