Netherlands vs Argentina Betting Preview
Netherlands booked their place in the last-eight with a convincing 3-1 win over USA. In the group stage the Dutch team topped their group with seven points. They comfortably beat Senegal and Qatar, with an underwhelming draw against Ecuador sandwiched in between. Cody Gakpo has been the standout player for the Dutch so far with three goals, but they have been boosted by the return of Memphis Depay from injury.
Argentina suffered a shock defeat to Saudi Arabia in their opening game but wins over Mexico and Poland ensured they topped the group. In the last-16 round, the Albiceleste defeated Australia 2-1 with relative ease. After opening the scoring against Australia Messi now has three goals from his four appearances.
Netherlands and Argentina have met on nine occasions in the past, with the Dutch winning four, drawing two and losing three. The two previous World Cup meetings between these two team, in 2006 and 2014, failed to produce a goal. Argentina progressed from a semi-final tie in 2014 as a penalty shootout was required to separate the teams.
With these two nations being full of amazing talent, the bookies are struggling to pick a clear favourite. Argentina narrowly has the edge, with William Hill offering 13/10 for the Albiceleste to win. Netherlands are 11/4 to ruin Lionel Messi's dream with SpreadEx while the draw is backable at 11/5 with Quinnbet.
Netherlands (3-5-2): Noppert; Timber, Van Dijk, Ake; Dumfries, De Roon, De Jong, Blind, Klaassen; Gakpo, Depay
Louis Van Gaal has a full squad to choose from ahead of Friday's clash and is expected to name the same starting XI. Jeremie Frimpong and Stefan de Vrij have recovered from minor injuries in time for the game but they are not expected to start. Memphis Depay is fit and firing, and will be flanked by the current Dutch top-scorer, Cody Gakpo. The likes of Davy Klaassen and Marten de Roon have started the last two games in central midfield and will feature from the off alongside Frenkie De Jong. At the back, Virgil Van Dijk will have Justin Timber and Nathan Akè on his flanks.
Argentina (4-3-3): Martinez; Molina, Romero, Otamendi, Acuna; De Paul, Fernandez, Mac Allister; Di Maria, Alvarez, Messi
Lionel Scaloni has concerns over winger Angel Di Maria, who missed the match against Australia and is not 100% fit. His replacement Papu Gomez also is a doubt for the match, while Leo Messi and Julian Alvarez will retain their berth up front. In midfield, Enzo Fernandez will get the nod over Leandro Paredes and flank Rodrigo De Paul and Alexis Mac Allister. The four man backline will see Nicolas Otamendi and Cristian Romero at the center, Nahuel Molina and Marcos Acuna as full backs.
Netherlands v Argentina Predictions
This will be an incredibly competitive game between two sides operating at very similar levels.
Draws between the Netherlands and Argentina have been commonplace at the World Cup and we expect a stalemate here, in which both teams will find the back of the net.
The correct score could be a 1-1 or 2-2, while Virgil Van Dijk is our pick in the anytime goalscorer market..
