Morocco vs Portugal Betting Preview
Morocco are the surprise outfit so far at this year's World Cup. They were epic in their penalty shootout win over Spain, with goalkeeper Bounou saving two out of three penalties after regular and extra-time finished in a goalless draw. As a result, the North African side have conceded just once all tournament. Prior to that, Ziyech & co. drew their Group B opener with Croatia 0-0, but then beat Belgium 2-0 and Canada 2-1 to top the pile.
Portugal enter this clash on the back of a 6-1 trashing of Switzerland, with Gonçalo Ramos (who replaced Cristiano Ronaldo in the starting XI) scoring a hat-trick. It was a convincig performance from the Lusitans after a couple of hiccups during the group stage. In the first three games, Fernando Santos men beat Ghana (3-2) and Uruguay (2-0) but suffered a worrying defeat against South Korea (2-1).
Morocco and Portugal have only met on two previous occasions - both at the World Cup. In 1986, Morocco won 3-1 while in 2018 Portugal get their revenge (1-0 courtesy of a goal scored by Cristiano Ronaldo).
Despite playing without Neymar and many other regular starters, Portugal are havy favorites here. The bookies are pricing the Seleçao 21/50 to win (best odds at STS.co.uk). Morocco are 8/1 with Spreadex to deliver another upset at this World Cup, while the draw is backable at 41/10 with VBet.
Morocco (4-3-3): Bono; Hakimi, Aguerd, Saiss, Mazraoui; Amrabat, Amallah, Ounahi; Ziyech, En-Nesyri, Boufal
Morocco have injury concerns in defense as Nayef Aguerd is battling a groin injury while Roman Saiss is struggling with a tight harmstring. Highly rated full backs Achraf Hakimi and Noussair Mazraoui will retain their berth. In the middle of the park, Selim Amallah should continue ahead of Abdelhamid Sabiri while Sofyan Amrabat will anchor the midfield. Hakim Ziyech ad Sofiane Boufal will flank Youssef En-Nesyri up front.
Portugal (4-3-3): Costa; Dalot, Pepe, Dias, Guerreiro; Neves, Otavio, Silva; Fernandes, Felix, Ramos
Fernando Santos demoted Ronaldo to the bench for Benfica star Goncalo Ramos, and the youngster could get the nod over CR7 once again. The likes of Joao Felix and Bruno Fernandes will complete the front trio, with Rafael Leao providing a further option. No changes are expected in midfield - with Bernardo Silva and Otavio flanking William Carvalho - as well as in the four man backline. Nuno Mendes and Danilo Pereira are still out - the former for the rest of the tournament.
Morocco v Portugal Predictions
Morocco have impressed in Qatar, mixing attacking flair with defensive guile. The Moroccans have gone unbeaten against European powers Croatia, Belgium and Spain. Furthermore, they have kept six clean sheets from their last seven outings.
Portugal have started to fire all cylinders and will be fresher than their opponents, having eased past Switzerland in 90 minutes last time out.
Anyway, we believe it will not be an easy task for Fernando Santos' men. The match will be more levelled than the odds suggests, so we back Morocco +2 Handicap and Portugal to win by one.
The match could end with a 2-1 Portugal win and Gonçalo Ramos is our pick in the anytime goalscorer market.
