TOUR DE FRANCE STAGE 5 BETTING PREVIEW
Stage 5 starts at Lorient with a small downhill path and ends in Quimper with a short hill climb. There are five notable hill climbs of categories four and three. While they can’t be called mountains, these elevations are still considerable. The course profile resembles a hilly Ardennes classic, and the final half of the 204.5K stage will keep the riders either climbing or descending Brittany’s twisting, narrow roads. The focus will be on Ménez Quélerc'h, a very famous 2.9km straight climb in Breton cycling. Technically, it suits Peter Sagan to perfection. But it's also a day for the GC favourites to avoid any hiccups.Classics riders such as Greg Van Avermaet, Peter Sagan and Michael Matthews will be the men to watch on Wednesday. GVA will have the extra-motivations given by the yellow Jersey. The Slovakian enters this stage on the back of a runner-up finish to Fernando Gaviria on Tuesday and an impressive win on Stage 2 sprint.
Philippe Gilbert currently sits in fourth place overall, only 5 seconds behind Greg Van Avermaet. He has won every Ardennes Classic at least once in his career, and could try to win the stage and take the yellow jersey too.
His Quick-Step teammate, Julian Alaphilippe, sits only 2 seconds behind him and is another big threat for the yellow jersey — especially since BMC has a GC contender to protect in Richie Porte. The Frenchman has won similar stages in the last few Tour De France editions.
Fernando Gaviria is a big question mark. He is the fastest sprinter in the peloton, but will he keep the pace of the best classics riders in the final climb?
Arnaud Démare was a bit disapponting on STAGE 5 but he can't be ruled out for this kind of uphill arrivals while Sonny Colbrelli has already shown he has good legs with a runner-up finish on Stage 2. The Italian can certainly be a serious contender in this uphill sprint.
Gorka Izagirre, Michal Kwiatkowski are John Degenkolb other dark horses. And keep an eye on Alejandro Valverde, who has dominated the Ardennes Classics for a decade.
Daniel Martin is one of the most backed riders but we expect him to save his legs for the upcoming stages where he should have more chances to win.
