The Match III: Predictions, Odds & Betting Guide
The PGA TOUR is taking the week off but golf have fans have plenty to bet on as The Match III goes underway on Friday. This edition will not feature Tiger Woods nor Tom Brady, but will again have Phil Mickelson and Peyton Manning from The Match II. Mickelson will be joined by the 11-time All-Star, Charles Barkley while Steph Curry will partner the retired NFL quarterback. Below, we’ll look at the betting odds and make our predictions for who’ll win The Match III.

Where & When is The Match 3: Champions For Change?

"The Match III: Champions for Change" takes place on Friday 27th November 2020 (Black Friday) at Stone Canyon Golf Club at the base of the picturesque Tortolita mountains in Oro Valley, Arizona. The Match III format

The purpose here is to entertain and raise money for charity. The format will be a modified alternate shot, also known as Pinehurst.

With this format all four participants will tee off at each hole, but then they'll switch balls on the second shot. Hence, each team member plays his second shot from the teammate’s tee shot—until you get to the green. Then it’s alternate shot until a team holes out.

Who are the favorites?

Manning/Curry (8/13 with Betfair) are heavy favorites against the Mickelson/Barkley team (11/8 with William Hill) although the second team has a five-time major champion and one of the best golfers of all time. The X factor is Charles Barkley who's famous for having one of the ugliest golf swings that have ever been witnessed on a tee box.

Barkley has not played in a competitive golf tournament since July at the American Century Championship, where he was only able to make three pars and finished second to last.

On the other side, Stephen Curry is an excellent golfer and has suggested in the past that he will try to play professionally when his NBA career is over. The Golden State Warriors' guard is a near scratch golfer who has twice played the Korn Ferry Tour’s Ellie Mae Classic on a sponsor exemption but missed the cut both times (2017 and 2018). Anyway, in the past month, Curry has posted five scores—all of which are lower than 75. And the courses have been difficult. Reports are that he boasts a 0.6 handicap.

Two-time Super Bowl-winning Quarterback Peyton Manning is a decent golfer himself, as his handicap is reportedly around 6.4. The former NFL quarterback displayed a consistent game alongside Tiger Woods in the last edition of the Match II — even hitting his tee shot on a par 3 closer than Tiger and Phil.

The Match III Predictions:

As we saw with The Match II, the format is designed to make it as close and competitive as possible. The Curry/Manning duo looks more consistent but we should see a levelled competition. Stone Canyon is owned by Mickelson Golf Properties, and this will give the PGA Tour professional an even greater advantage.

We expect a tight match with Mickelson and Barkley battling their way through the course, but they will probably fall short of coming away with the win.
