Southampton v West Ham betting preview

Southampton have started life under Hassenhuttl with back-to-back wins

New Southampton manager Ralph Hassenhuttl has led his team to an entertaining 3-2 home win over Arsenal in his is first game and following that up with a 1-3 away victory over Huddersfield last weekend. The victory ovr Arsenal was their first home victory this season. They were three points above the relegation zone before the start of this matchday but the Saints will face Manchester City and Chelsea over the next week or so. As for direct matches, Southampton are undefeated in 9 of their last 10 home matches against West Ham in all competitions.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg is suspended after getting booked at the weekend and Mario Lemina looks the most likely to replace him in central midfield after returning to fitness. Maya Yoshida's involvement in the upcoming Asian Cup may rule him out. As a result, the likes of Jannik Vestergaard, Jan Bednarek and Jack Stephen should form the three man backline, with Matt Targett and Yan Valery favourite to start as full backs. Up front, Nathan Redmon and Stuart Armstrong should support the lone striker Danny Ings, altough Charlie Austin and Shane Long are pushing for a start.

West Ham missed out on an excellent opportunity to bolster their chances for European play last weekend

West Ham racked up four consecutive Premier League wins in their first four games of this month - who have forced their way up to 12th in the table despite losing their opening 4 matches - but suffered a 2-0 defeat at home against Watford last time out. They are actually unbeaten in the league since the start of October and have lost just 3 away games this season. Prior to the Watford game, the Hammers have scored 11 goals in four outings, almost half of their offensive production so far.

Andy Carroll has a good chance of starting on Boxing Day, as Javier Hernandez looks set to miss out. Michael Antonio is expected to partner Carroll upfront. The likes of Marko Arnautovic, Winston Reid, Manuel Lanzini, Carlos Sanchez, Andriy Yarmolenko, Ryan Fredericks, and Jack Wilshere are also ruled out. Manuel Pellegrini could freshen his side up for the busy Christmas period he could replace Arthur Masuaku with Aaron Cresswell or perhaps Mark Noble with Pedro Obiang. Furthermore, defender Fabian Balbuena was forced off with an injury and should be replaced by Angelo Ogbonna at the back.
