Russia v Croatia betting preview
Russia are making the most of home advantageRussia pulled off a stunning upset of heavily favored Spain through a nerve-shredding penalty shootout, to advance to the quarter-finals for the first time since 1970. The extra time saw the two teams sharing the spoils with a 1-1 scoreline. They were the lowest ranked team at the tournament before the start but collected six point in the Group A, beating 5-0 Saudi Arabia and 3-1 Egypt before to lose 3-0 to Uruguay in the final group stage match. With just 1 clean sheet in their last 14 internationals, they are clearly not totally convincing at the back. This will be the fourth match between these countries and Russia have never previously beaten Croatia
Stanislav Cherchesov switched to a three-man defence against Spain but may revert back to a 4-2-3-1 formation here. He could welcome back Denis Cheryshev after the Villarreal star started as a substitute against Spain. Alan Dzagoev could be fit to feature for the first time since he suffered a harmstring injury during the opening match. Artem Dzyuba should get the nod over Fedro SMolov for the lone striker position, while left back Yuri Zhirkov is a major injury concern.
Croatia have clearly got the quality required to go deep in this competitionCroatia cruised through the group stages, winning all three of their matches, with a thumping 3-0 victory against Argentina a notable highlight for the Blazers. Anyway, they also required penalties in the last round against a tough Denmark side. They were disappointing performance-wise last time out, judging by their displays in the group phase. The Croatians have only lost one of their seven World Cup matches against fellow European opposition (W5 D1). As to direct matches, Croatia won the most recent head-to-head fixture, 3-1 in a November 2015 friendly match in Rostov-on-Don with Marcelo Brozovic and Mario Mandzukic among the goalscorers
Luka Modric, Ivan Rakitic and Marcelo Brozovic will form the almost impeccable midfield we admired so far, meaning Mateo Kovacic and Milan Badelj will have to settle for another place on the bench. Mario Mandzukic will lead the line, while Ivan Perisic and Ante Rebic will start out wide. Ivan Strinic is a doubt after being forced off with injury last time out. Sime Vrsaljko, Damagoj Vida and Dejan Lovren will complete the four man backline.
