TOUR DE FRANCE STAGE 20 BETTING PREVIEW
The finish line is situated in ski station Le Markstein, after six KOM climbs:
- The Ballon d’Alsace (2nd category, 11.5 kilometres at 5.2%)
- Col de la Croix des Moinats (2nd category, 5.2 kilometres at 7%)
- Col de Grosse-Pierre (2nd category, 3.2 kilometres at 8%)
- Col de la Schlucht (3rd category, 4.3 kilometres at 5.4%)
- Petit Ballon (1st category, 9.3 kilometres climb at 8.1%)
- Col du Platzerwasel (1st category, 7.1 kilometres at 8.4%)
The Platzerwasel crests with 8 kilometres to go. After the summit the route continues for 4 kilometres on undulating terrain, after which a short downhill leads onto the last 3 kilometres on the flat.
The profile is perfect both for a breakaway and a battle among GC riders.
Stage 20 Favourites
Jonas Vingegaard only has to arrive at the finish safely. As a consequence, we expect the yellow jersey to run conservatively even if he is by far the best climber and is yet to win a stage (he has only won the individual time trial).
Tadej Pogaçar has struggled in the third week, suffering two bloody defeats in the ITT and in the "queen stage" the following day. Having had an incomplete preparation ahead of this Tour, we don't expect the Slovenian to have fully recovered. So, rather than an early attack we expect Pogaçar to defend his 2nd position in the overall standings.
Adam Yates, Carlos Rodriguez and Simon Yates are fighting for the podium. They are within 49 seconds and will mark each other. Hence, we don't expect them in the breakaway but they will surely battle it out on the final climb.
Pello Bilbao and Jai Hindley are a couple of minutes behind. If they will try to escape, team UAE and Ineos Grenadiers will surely chase them and neutralise the attack.
Who will go in the breakaway?
The lower Top10 in Felix Gall, Sepp Kuss and David Gaudu are all possible attackers, alongside Guillaume Martin (11th in the GC), Tom Pidcock, the current KOM leader Giulio Ciccone and Thibaut Pinot, who is set to retire at the end of this season.
Anyway, almost all the stages in the third week have been won by "fresher" riders who have saved their legs in the first part of the Tour or are not involved in the GC battle.
The likes of Chris Harper, Michael Woods, Jonathan Castroviejo, Pierre Latour, Nicholas Schultz, Michal Kwiatkowski, Mathieu Burgaudeau, Mikel Landa and Simon Guglielmi might be fresh enough to deliver a major upset.
Evergreen stage hunters such as Warren Barguil, Tiesj Benoot, Velentin Madouas, Mattias Skjelmose, Woet Poels, Tobias Johannessen, Ion Izaguirre and Maxim Van Gils are also likely to be very active.
