TOUR DE FRANCE STAGE 2 BETTING PREVIEW
Stage 2 is not a walk in the park. It features 2,550 metres of climbing, and two punchy climbs in the final 10 kilometres.
The Côte du Haut Pichot, which average 9.4 per cent for over a kilometre, is followed by the 900m, 11 per cent Côte de Saint Etienne au Mont.
The final ascent is the Côte d’Outreau: 800 metres at 8.8%. From the top of the climb, there are still 4 kilometres to race before the last 1.2-kilometre drag to the finish line at an average of 3.8%. This should seperate the puncheurs from the pure sprinters and with the yellow jersey up for grabs it should make for an interesting finale.
Wind off the sea could add to the chaos as gusts coming in from the sea could cause splits in the peloton once they reach the coast.
There will be even more stress than day one not just for stage hunters, but also for GC hopefuls trying to stay out of trouble.
Stage 2 Favourites
This stage has the names of Mathieu Van Der Poel and Wout Van Aert written on it, but Tadej Pogaçar will aim to make an early statement in this Tour. In our opinion, the Dutchman has the edge over the Belgian at the moment, with Pogaçar just behind Van Der Poel.
Filippo Ganna's race is already over after the Italian crashed on Saturday and was forced to withdraw. He would have been one of the favourites for sure.
Remco Evenepoel lost almost 40 seconds in Stage 1 and the Belgian will be out for revenge, even if the stage profile suits his opponents more than him.
Jonas Vingegaard's main goal will be not to lose ground to Pogaçar while Lidl Trek's Thibau Nys has the potential to compete with the best puncheurs..
Dark horses?
UAE's Jhonatan Narvaez will probably anticipate Pogaçar's attack, but has the potential to win the stage should the GC contenders hesitate or fail to make gaps.Possible dark horses are Florian Lipowitz, who was also second at Paris-Nice earlier this season, and Primoz Roglic, who could not be ruled out. Simon Yates had an impressive Giro d'Italia and will try to bring that form into the Tour.
Julian Alaphilippe saved his legs in Stage 1, probably because he is targeting this stage. The likes of Alex Aranburu, Santiago Buitrago, Ben Healy, Søren Wærenskjold, Tobias Johannessen and Mathias Skjelmose are other possible contenders expecially if the breakaway succeed while Romain Gregoire and Kevin Vauquelin are the other French hopes.
If riders approach the final climbs conservatively, sprinters with good climbing skills could be in the mix. Jasper Philipsen, Biniam Girmay and Danny Van Poppel are the riders you should not underestimate in this scenario.
