TOUR DE FRANCE STAGE 16 BETTING PREVIEW

Stage 16 is a perfect warm-up race ahead of the Pyrenees giants of the coming days.

Two category 3 climbs in the first 36 kilometers, the Côte de Saint-Hilaire (1.5 kilometres at 6.6%) and the Col de l’Espinas (5.3 kilometres at 5%) - will probably see a strong breakaway going up the road.

With 53.5 kilometers to go the riders will go over the summit of the Port de Lers (11.5 kilometers with a 6.7% average gradient). The 14km descent brings the riders to the base of the last and hardest climb of the day.

Starting with about 37.5km left, the Mur de Péguère (a 9.3 kilometres climb at 7.9%) is very demanding. The first six kilometers are quite gentle, but they are followed by one kilometre at 13% and a steepest sector at 18%.

After cresting the Mur de Péguère (a 9.3 kilometres climb at 7.9%) the riders fly down a 27 kilometres descent to the line in Foix.

Here strong descenders are given the opportunity to showcase their special talents, unless they are too far from the top climbers.

Occasional thunderstorms in the afternoon can make the descent into Foix even more dangerous than it already is. In that case, the Yellow Jersey could be very cautious and the closest contenders can decide to take the risk and attack.

Stage 16 Favourites

This will be a day where the general classification will be on the line but the big question is whether or not the GC riders will go for the stage win.

Actually, there aren't so many teams that can control the race, so a breakaway can succeed.

Surely, it’s Pogacar’s first of three chances to bounce back a bit at Vingegaard before the final Tour time trial on Saturday. But the UAE Emirates captain only has five teammates and can't chase breakaways.

The same applies to Team Jumbo Visma as the Yellow Jersey lost two important teammates on Sunday - Primoz Roglic and Steven Kruijswijk. A bad day for Vingegaard that also left him assessing his own injuries following a collision with Tiesj Benoot.

Hence, we would go for the winning breakaway scenario. A small group of escapees will probably contest the stage win.

In this case, the likes of Thomas Pidcock, Thibaut Pinot, Dylan Teuns, Bauke Mollema, Lennard Kamna, Michael Woods, and Luis-Leon Sanchez are our main picks.

The break may even include some sprinters fighting for the green jersey, but they will not be serious contenders for the stage.

Other riders that could be in the mix are Damiano Caruso, Maximilian Schachmann, Giulio Ciccone, Carlos Verona, Ion Izaguirre, Rigoberto Uran, Matej Mohoric, Chris Froome, Nick Schultz and Felix Großschartner.

Dark horses?

Riders that are fighting for a Top 10 placement in the General Classification could pose a threat here -

Bob Jungels, Alexandr Vlasov, Albert Bettiol, Patrick Konrad and Neilson Powless.

Should GC contenders' teams keep things tight, it will be a battle between Tadej Pogaçar and Jonas Vingegaard, with Romain Bardet, Geraint Thomas ad Nairo Quintana just behind the front duo in our order of preference.Stage 16 - Tour De France 2022
