Super Bowl LVI Info

The Super Bowl 2022 will kick off at 6:30 p.m. EST on Sunday (23:30 UK Time), Feb. 13, from SoFi Stadium in the Los Angeles suburb of Inglewood, California.

This is the second time in NFL history — and the second year in a row — that the Super Bowl is taking place at the home field of one of the teams playing in it (The Rams share SoFi Stadium with the Los Angeles Chargers).

Super Bowl Preview: The Two Teams

Cincinnati Bengals

The Bengals hadn't won a playoff game in 31 years and were entering Year 3 of a rebuild after totaling six wins over the prior two seasons. They had 150/1 championship odds a day before the season started.

The finished the regular season with a 10-7 record, winning the AFC North and battling through a season that included losses to the New York Jets and Chicago Bears.

Burrow & co. finished strong, winning three of their final four regular-season games and defeating the fifth-seeded Raiders in the first round - their first home playoff game in more than 30 years.

They followed up with a last-second field goal win over no.1 seed Tennessee Titans in the Divisional Round despite the return of Derrick Henry.

The Bengals came from 21-3 down to win the AFC Championship game 27-24 at the Kansas City Chiefs, holding Patrick Mahomes & co. to three total points between the second half and overtime.

There’s no doubt Joe Burrow is a special talent but the Bengals have surrounded with him with the weapons to succeed too in Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins, two top-quality receivers.

Los Angeles Rams

The Rams are appearing in their second Super Bowl in four seasons, having lost 13-3 to the New England Patriots in 2018. They will have the advantage of playing the big game in their home stadium and are hoping to follow in the footsteps of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who won the Super Bowl last season in their own stadium.

LA Rams have topped the NFC West with a 12-5 record after starting the season 7-1. The midseason slide included losses to Aaron Rodgers' Green Bay Packers, Tennessee Titans and San Francisco 49ers.

The Rams started the post-season by beating the Arizona Cardinals 34-11 in the Wild Card round.

They survived the Divisional Round after blowing a 24-point lead to Tom Brady 's Tampa Bay Buccaneers. In the NFC Title Game, the Rams were trailing 17-7 against San Francisco 49ers entering the fourth quarter, but eventually prevailed 20-17 to lift the NFC Championship.

Defense vs Offense

Both the Bengals and Rams finished 2021 with top-10 passing offenses. L.A. ranked fifth, and the Bengals ranked seventh.

Likewise, both teams had bottom-half defenses, with LA Rams ranking 17th and Cincinnati 18th.

Anyway, Cincinnati have dramatically improved in defense, having held their opponents to fewer than 20 points per game in the play-offs so far. They held Las Vegas, Tennessee and Kansas City to a combined 5-of-13 in the red zone and forced seven total turnovers.

The Rams have a strong offense, having averaged more than 370 total yards and 270 passing yards per game this season. They have scored 27.1 points per game during the regular season, a top-eight figure in the NFL despite Rams coach Sean McVay 's game management continue to be puzzling.

Anyway, they are also improving defensively and if they can pressure Burrow like they did Jimmy Garoppolo at the end of the NFC championship game or Tom Brady in the divisional playoff round, it could be a long day for the Bengals.

Aaron Donald and Von Miller have wreaked havoc during the Rams’ run of eight wins in the last nine games.

Key injuries

Rams: C.J. Uzomah TE (Questionable), Josh Tupou DT (Questionable), Cameron Sample DE (Questionable).

The Quarterbacks

Joe Burrow (Cincinnati Bengals)

Should he win his first Super Bowl, Burrow will make history in this sport. He would become the first quarterback to win the Heisman Trophy, a college football national championship and a Super Bowl with a Bengals win on Sunday.

He threw for 4,611 yards and 34 touchdowns against 14 interceptions this season. He had injury problems last term but has revolutioned his team this season and has upped his game during the playoffs, leading Cincinnati to wins over the Las Vegas Raiders, the Tennessee Titans and the Kansas City Chiefs (when he overshadowed Patrick Mahomes).

Interestingly, Joe Burrow was sacked more than any other quarterback this season (51 times, nine of which came against the Tennessee Titans), which is notable, because it marked the first time in NFL history that the most-sacked quarterback in the NFL led his team to the Super Bowl.

Matthew Stafford (Los Angeles Rams)

Matthew Stafford excelled in Los Angeles Rams coach McVay's offense this year, throwing for 4,886 yards and 41 touchdowns with 17 interceptions.

Entering the season, the Rams quarterback hadn't won a playoff game in 12 years during his stint in Detroit, but has been impressive in the post-season.

During the regular season, he ranked third in passing yards and second in passing touchdowns. In the playoffs, he has been an even more efficient version of himself, upping his completion percentage (72) and nearly erasing his giveaways (one interception, zero fumbles in three games).

He has plenty of experience and in Kupp and Odell Beckham Jr he has the receivers needed to pose problems for the Bengals.

Possible Touchdown Scorers

Cincinnati running back Joe Mixon has 17 touchdowns in 19 games this season. He even has five games this season with two touchdowns. The Bengals always keep him involved—he hasn't touched the ball fewer than 20 times this postseason.

For the Bengals, Ja’Marr Chase has produced 20 catches for 279 yards and a score in three post-season games. The rookie may have something of an advantage, with Rams’ cornerback Jalen Ramsey listed as questionable due to a shoulder injury.

As for the Rams, we fancy MVP contender Cooper Kupp, who posted 1,947 yards and 16 touchdowns so far. He has been the most productive receiver in the league this season and he’ll be hard for the Bengals to stop.

Los Angeles' Cam Akers could be an appealing long-shot. He didn't suit up until Week 18 due to an Achilles injury, and he has still received 54 carries (plus five catches on six targets) in these playoffs so far.

Another sleeper could be Tyler Higbee. Since OBJ and Kupp will be double-teamed, it could allow Higbee to be wide open.

Our Super Bowl LVI Predictions

The Rams went 5-3 at home this season, and 4-1 versus non-conference opponents. The Bengals were a respectable 5-3 on the road, and 2-3 against NFC teams.

Sean McVay’s roster is absolutely loaded on all levels, from Kupp & Odell Beckham Jr, to Aaron Donald & Von Miller and so much more, but this will be no cake walk.

We expect the Rams to win the Super Bowl by a 5-6 points margin, enough to cover also the four points handicap line.
