2020 KING GEORGE VI CHASE BETTING PREVIEW
Paul Nicholls’ Clan Des Obeaux will go to Kempton as the likely favourite having won the contest in both 2018 and 2019. He beat Thistlecrack by a length and a half in 2018 but was most impressive when annihilating the opposition 12 months ago when he slammed stablemate Cyrname by a wide margin. He finished an encouraging second to course specialist Bristol De Mai on his Haydock reintro
Cyrname was a faller in the 2020 Ascot Chase in February, and Nicholls pulled stumps on his campaign. He belied doubts about his stamina and ability to handle a left-handed track when bolting up in the Grade 2 Charlie Hall Chase at Wetherby on his reappearance, proving his stamina for three miles in the process. Has had a nice break since and should be spot on for this.
Lostintranslation was a 15-8 shot when pulling up in this race 12 months ago and underwent wind surgery shortly afterwards. He bounced back with a fine third in the Cheltenham Gold Cup in March, he recorded another low point in a 12 month period of ups and downs when disappointing in this year's Betfair Chase
Santini has been supplemented for this and has never finished out of the first three. He finished third in the Kauto Star Novices' Chase last term, runner-up in RSA Chase two years ago and beaten a neck in the Cheltenham Gold Cup at the latest Festival. Nicky Henderson's charge ade satisfactory return at Aintree 3 weeks ago but this test probably sharp enough for him.
Waiting Patiently won his first six starts over fences, but he has been limited to only four appearances since then due to injury. He has shown to be still capable of top-class performances last year when finishing within a length of Defi du Seuil and Un de Sceaux when third in the Tingle Creek Chase at Sandown.
Black Op looked a high-class prospect when impressively winning over fences at Stratford on his return last season and was beaten only by Champ and Slate House on his next two starts. His prominent running style will be an asset and he makes each-way appeal at huge odds.
Saint Calvados produced a career-best effort to be beaten a neck by Min in the Ryanair Chase (with Frodon back in fourth) when last seen in March start. This will be his first start at three miles. After nine months off it should be a tough task.
Frodon has won two of his three starts here, falling when beaten in the other. His past form suggests he is just below elite level and is the least fancied of four entries from the Nicholls yard.
Real Steel completes the quartet of Nicholls runners and should strip fitter for last month’s Ascot third on his first start for the Ditcheat handler.
