2022 KING GEORGE VI CHASE BETTING PREVIEW
L'HOMME PRESSE was a sparkling winner of the Brown Advisory Novices' Chase at the Cheltenham Festival last season. The Venetia Williams-trained returned with a stunning display to win the Rehearsal Chase at Newcastle. That success earned him a rating of 170, which sees him as the highest-rated runner in this field. He can make it an impressive seven out of eight over fences.BRAVEMANSGAME has won five of his six chase starts to date, including over C&D in the Kauto Star Novices’ Chase in 2021, beating Ahoy Senor by over seven lengths. He skipped last year's Cheltenham Festival becuase of the ground conditions but cemented his claims with a comeback victory in the Charlie Hall Chase at Wetherby in October and is strongly fancied to provide Paul Nicholls with a 13th King George success.
ENVOI ALLEN returned to winning ways beating Kemboy, Conflated and Galvin at Down Royal’s Champion Chase last month. That was his first time over 3m and it’s a huge indicator of his potential over this new distance. He had good runs over two miles last season, and finished third in the Champion Chase at the Cheltenham Festival. He has only had 11 starts over fences, winning six.
HITMAN was narrowly denied in Aintree’s Old Roan Handicap off 159 on his seasonal bow before easily winning a 2m 5½f Graduation Chase at Haydock - beating his three rivals by 11 lengths. Stamina over three miles remains a concern but the six-year-old is open to plenty of improvement and has the guidance of Sam Twiston-Davies in the saddle.
ROYAL PAGAILLE is a previous winner over course and distance. He finished second in the Betfair Chase and fifth in Cheltenham Gold Cup last year, showing he can be competitive in top company. He missed his intended reappearance in the Betfair Chase last month but his fitness shouldn’t be too much of an issue as he goes well fresh.
FRODON, winner of the 2020 edition of this race, appears to be largely unfancied to repeat those heroics. This eleven-year-old was only fourth in his repeat bid in this last season but proved he is still capable of high-class form when he defied a mark of 158 to win the Badger Beer at Wincanton on his seasonal return in early-November. Anyway, he was not quite at that level when third in the Betfair Chase in his most recent outing.
ELDORADO ALLEN was second to Bravemansgame in the Charlie Hall and has since filled the runner-up spot in Haydock's Betfair Chase behind Protektorat. Last year, the Colin Tizzard's charge landed the Haldon Gold Cup at Exeter and the Denman Chase (beating Royale Pagaille) at Newbury.
AHOY SENOR is an outsider here. He was one of the leading novices last season but he has yet to reproduce his best form in two starts this term including when only third behind Grand National hero Noble Yeats in the Many Clouds Chase at Aintree earlier this month. Moreover, he was far from disgraced when second to Bravemansgame in the Kauto Star over this course and distance 12 months ago. Ahoy Senor also had L’Homme Presse behind him when winning Aintree Grade 1 on final start last season.
The field is completed by MILLERS BANK, a winner of the the Manifesto Novices’ Chase at the Grand National meeting. He confirmed himself a very smart chaser when runner-up in Carlisle listed and Huntingdon Grade 2 on his last 2 outings, but looks beaten in this company.
