Who is the favorite to win the King George VI Chase this year?
There are nine runners in the King George VI Chase 2021, giving punters a pretty firm idea of how the race could shape up on Boxing Day.
This year's edition sees Paul Nicholls’ Frodon bid to win back to back editions while Clan Des Obeaux is out to win his third King George VI Chase.
Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Minella Indo, Chantry House and Asterion Forlonge are the main contenders of the remaining 7 runners.
2021 KING GEORGE VI CHASE BETTING PREVIEW
MINELLA INDO is the bookies' favorite. The Cheltenham Gold Cup hero was beaten five lengths when third to the reopposing Frodon on his return in the Champion Chase at Down Royal in October, but looked like he'd come on plenty for the run. He should come forwards for it and if he can match the level of form that he showed at Cheltenham in March, he could be almost unbeatable. Furthermore, he is set to wear cheekpieces for the first time at Kempton on Sunday.FRODON will go in search of back-to-back King George crowns on Sunday for Bryony Frost and Paul Nicholls. He comes into this race in form having defeated Minella Indo in the Down Royal Champion Chase last time out
Two-time King George VI chase winner CLAN DES OBEAUX landed Grade One races at both Aintree (the Aintree Bowl) and Punchestown (the Punchestown Champion Chase), beating Al Boum Photo in the latter. He will be seeking to regain his crown after finishing third to his stablemate last year. His trainer Paul Nicholls admitted that running him at Haydock last season was a mistake and probably the reason for his flat run in the King George. He makes his seasonal reappearance this time around at Kempton
CHANTRY HOUSE returned this season with an easy win at Sandown and back in April also beat the useful Shan Blue easily in the Mildmay Novices’ Chase at Aintree. He has won 5 of his 6 starts over fences and was a nice winner of the Marsh Novices’ Chase at the Cheltenham Festival back in March. Anyway, this will be his first run here at Kempton.
LOSTINTRANSLATION bounced back to winning ways in the 1965 Chase at Ascot. His two previous attempts at the King George haven't ended well.
Nicholls' new recruit SAINT CALVADOS, last year's fourth, makes his first start for the Ditcheat handler. He is a Cheltenham specialist - especially when the ground comes up soft - having finished a neck behind Min in the 2020 Ryanair Chase. He is 0-6 in Grade 1 company, so it unlikely to make it 7th time lucky at the top table
ASTERION FORLONGE looked the most likely winner of the John Durkan prior to his fall. Willie Mullins' grey is a mercurial talent and the track at Kempton will definitely suit. Anyway, he needs a big improvement in the jumping department.
MISTER FISHER, who makes his seasonal return from a 246-day layoff, won the novice hurdle on this card in 2018 and after 9 starts over fences, he may not be fully exposed. However, he has had plenty of goes in Grade 1 company.
TORNADO FLYER is a nice horse, but he isn’t a grade 1 horse and is likely to be ridden to pick up the pieces here
