EPSOM DERBY BETTING PREVIEW
The Derby is a Group 1 race, run over a mile-and-a-half and open to thoroughbred three-year-old colts and fillies. It is the most prestigious of the five classics and the middle leg of the Triple Crown, alongside the 2000 Guineas, in Newmarket, and the St Leger Stakes, in Yorkshire.
Let's take a look at this year's contenders!
BOLSHOI BALLET is the one they all must defeat according to the bookies. The Aidan O’Brien-trained colt shot to the head of the market after impressive wins in the Group 3 Ballysax Stakes and Group 2 Derrinstown Derby Trial at Leopardstown in the last two months, both over 10 furlongs. Anyway, he has raced once at Group One level and finished fifth of seven. Is this colt good enough?
MAC SWINEY is the cloeses contender in the betting. He won the Irish 2,000 Guineas, beating Newmarket hero and stable companion Poetic Flare in the process. He does have six and three-quarter lengths to find on Bolshoi Ballet after finishing fourth in the Derrinstown, but he showed clear improvement when winning at the Curragh last month.
MOOHAFET represents trainer William Haggas and Shadwell Stud. He has improved dramatically since being sent over a mile and a quarter this season and produced an impressive performance to win without coming off the bridle at Newmarket last time.
JOHN LEEPER, who will be partnered by legendary jockey Frankie Dettori, is clearly much better than he was able to show at Newmarket. We are sure he will show further improvement after his Listed Fairway Stakes success three weeks ago for Ed Dunlop.
Godolphin’s HURRICANE LANE carries the only unbeaten record into this year’s Derby. The Frankel colt is a perfect 3-3 after supplementing his victory in a Conditions race at Newbury in April with a determined victory in the Dante Stakes at York last month. There’s nothing in his pedigree to suggest this trip won’t be within his grasp.
Lingfield Derby Trial winner THIRD REALM also comes into the race being slightly overlooked despite fending off the reopposing Adayer with a strong-staying effort in May. His ability to find full stride on a downhill track will aid his cause and after just three outings, he is open to far more improvement than most.
ONE RULER ran consistently as a two-year-old, beat Maximal a length and a half in a Sandown maiden. He beat subsequent top-class winner Van Gogh in the Group Three Autumn Stakes at Newmarket and signed off in October with a narrow defeat to Mac Swiney in the Group One Vertem Futurity Trophy at Doncaster.
