EPSOM DERBY BETTING PREVIEWTrained by Sir Michael Stoute, DESERT CROWN won a maiden at Nottingham in November impressively on debut and is the odds-on favourite following his impressive reappearance victory in the Dante Stakes at York. He hasn’t won over this trip but should be there abouts having won well over 1m2f last time out. While that was a tremendous effort, Desert Crown is open to further improvement in the Derby.
Aidan O Brien's STONE AGE has looked an improved performer in wins at Navan and Leopardstown this spring. He left a decent field behind in the Group 3 Derby Trial at the Foxrock venue last time, running over 1m 2f that day. He stayed on impressively, indicating that the Derby distance would be of no concern.
NATIONS PRIDE has won all four starts since his debut second at Yarmouth in September. He was a winner at Meydan in the spring and blitzed his rivals in the Listed Newmarket Stakes in April with an impressive display. Supplemented for £75,000 and the choice of William Buick.
Another AP O’Brien runner, CHANGINGOFTHEGUARD won the Chester Vase well last time out. Prior to that, he entered this season as a maiden before his win at Dundalk, announcing himself as a classic challenger.
PIZ BADILE cemented his place at the head of the Derby betting with victory in the Ballysax Stakes at Leopardstown at the start of April, displaying a very willing attitude. Step up in trip likely to suit and must be respected.
Dark horses?Charlie Appleby’s WALK OF STARS has a very similar profile to last year’s winner Adayar (second at Lingfield). He showed some signs of inexperience in the closing stages and was beaten narrowly in the Lingfield Derby Trial. Anyway, he will not go unfancied for the Derby representing some strong connections.
WESTOVER landed the Sandown Classic Trial on his seasonal reappearance at the end of April.
After disappointing in his seasonal debut in the Craven Stakes, STAR OF INDIA improved significantly up in trip in the Dee Stakes, beating Sonny Liston two and a half lengths, a horse who was previously beaten nearly six lengths by Guineas fourth Eydon in the Feilden.
NAHANNI is 3 from 3 since an encouraging debut. He showed an aptitude for Epsom when taking their Blue Riband Trial in April. On that day he pipped Grand Alliance to the victory by half a length. Prior to that, he stayed on strongly to defy a penalty by a wide margin in a novice at Leicester. Still completely unexposed, he bolsters a similar profile to his stablemate Adayar, last year's derby winner.
ROYAL PATRONAGE was progressive at 2YO, taking out Newmarket's Group 2 Royal Lodge in September for his third win, with Coroebus behind in second. He finished 8th in the 2000 Guineas this season and was easily brushed aside by Desert Crown when upped in trip for Dante.
