The Dubai World Cup is the richest thoroughbred horse race in the world and it continues to be one of the most popular betting races of the year. It carries a purse of US$12 million, regaining its place as the world's richest horse race, having lost that title to the Pegasus World Cup in 2017 and 2018.
2022 DUBAI WORLD CUP BETTING PREVIEW
Todd Pletcher's LIFE IS GOOD has been virtually unstoppable at the graded stakes level, going from his maiden victory directly to winning last year’s Sham Stakes (Grade III) the San Felipe Stakes (Grade II). His only setback came following a five-month layoff when he finished runner up at Saratoga last August (in the H. Allen Jerkens Memorial Stakes) but has won his subsequent three outings since - the Kelso Handicap (Grade II) at Belmont, the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile (Grade I) at Del Mar, and the Pegasus World Cup Invitational Stakes (Grade I) at Gulfstream Park.
Bob Baffert-trained HOT ROD CHARLIE has four wins in 14 starts. He won two Grade 1 events later in the season, though he was disqualified in the Haskell Stakes at Monmouth when deemed at fault for Midnight Bourbon falling in the straight. He warmed up for this event with a facile win in Round 2 of the Al Maktoum Challenge (Group 2) against mainly local horses and looks Life Is Good's main challenger.
There is just one British-trained horse in this race. COUNTRY GRAMMER is set to be ridden by Frankie Dettori and looks the most likely behind the two big favourites. He won the Hollywood Gold Cup last May before suffering an injury. He returned with a narrow runner-up at the Saudi Cup last month. He is wearing a tongue-tie for the first time.
MIDNIGHT BOURBON has not big wins in his CV but he has recorded second-place finishes in important races like the Preakness Stakes, Travers Stakes, and Pennsylvania Derby. He comes to Dubai after a solid third in last month’s Saudi Cup behind Emblem Road and Country Grammer.
Dark horses?
MAGNY COURS ran a blinder on his first attempt on the surface when filling the placings in last year’s running. He ran well last year but has been underwhelming this season. He finished 10th of 14 in the Saudi Cup last month, well behind Contry Grammer and Midnight Bourbon.
Irish bred REAL WORLD finished 11th in that race, beaten 20l behind the winner. Anyway, Saeed bin Suroor's charge flourished on the turf last summer, reeling off a four-timer, and he picked up where he left off after four months on the sidelines when also winning the Zabeel Mile back in January.
Sheikh Al Maktoum's HYPOTETHICAL won here at Meydan over course and distance last month - beating Remorse by 1 length. He enters the race off the back of two wins in a row having scored in the the Al Maktoum Challenge R3 this season. He was also good enough to finish fourth in the Dubai World Cup last year.
CHUWA WIZARD finished second in the 2021 Dubai World Cup, so will be looking to go one better 12 months on. She won on her latest outing when 2-7fav in the Group 1 Kawasaki Kinen but overall she has run inconsistently in Japan.
AERO TREM has won three Group 1 races and enters the race on the back of a big effort as he ran creditably when fifth in the Saudi Cup. Although he never threatened the leaders, he did finish with good energy. We expect improvements in his second outing away form home, so he could be a smart long-shot option for a Top 3 finish.
REMORSE finished just 1 length behind Hypothetical on his last outing over C&D earlier this month, the Al Maktoum Challenge Round 3. While he arrives in good form, it’s worth noting that he has finished second nine times in 13 lifetime races. We don't expect him to make the frame this time.
