In the first one, they suffered a defeat against Spezia (1-2) also due to a referee error. Then, the Rossoneri only managed to draw 0-0 against Juventus before the international break. They are 4 points behind Inter having played one game more than their city rivals, and a defeat in the Derby would potentially send Milan down to -10 (a gap perhaps already insurmountable with 14 games left). Considering matches against other Top 6 clubs, Stefano Pioli's team has only managed to beat Roma (both at home and at the Olimpico) and Atalanta (2-3 in Bergamo last October).

The other newcomer, Felipe Caicedo, will sit on the bench, ready to play the final minutes if needed. Up front, Lautaro Martinez should get the nod over Alexis Sanchez, for a place next to Edin Dzeko. The other ballot is between Denzel Dumfries and Matteo Darmian, with the Dutch favorite to feature from the off. Elsewhere, the three defenders (Milan Skriniar, Stefan De Vrij and Alessandro Bastoni), as well as the midfielders (Marcelo Brozovic, Hakim Calhanoglu and Nicolò Barella) will retain their berth.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic will miss the derby due to his Achilles tendon problems. Olivier Giroud is expected to lead the line, since Ante Rebic also is sidelined. Behind the central striker, Frank Kessiè (returning from the African Cup of Nations) will be deployed as an offensive midfielder, with Rafael Leao and Alexis Saelemaekers out wide. Therefore, Brahim Diaz will be probably benched. The likes of Sandro Tonali and Ismael Bennacer will anchor the midfield. At the back, Fikayo Tomori is back in contention but Pierre Kalulu should start as centre back alongside Alessio Romagnoli. Simon Kjaer and Fodè Ballo-Tourè are out through injury.
