Ireland v England betting preview
Ireland are aiming to rebuild under Icelandic head coach Heimir Halgrimsson after failing to qualify for the last four major tournaments. They have won only two of their last 10 fixtures and were defeated 3-0 away to Portugal in a June friendly. The Icelandic manager, who helped to mastermind Iceland's embarrassment of England at Euro 2016 as joint coach, has replaced Stephen Kenny in the permanent role after John O'Shea's interim spell. During O'Shea's reign earlier in the year, Ireland beat Hungary and impressively drew with Belgium while losing to Switzerland and Portugal.
England are looking for a response after their agonising 2-1 loss to Spain in the Euro 2024 final, their second defeat in a row in a European Championship final after their loss on penalties against Italy at Wembley in 2021. The Three Lions were unbeaten in 15 competitive matches until their loss to Spain. Gareth Southgate called time on his reign after that game and Lee Carsley has been named his interim replacement – stepping up from his role as England U21s head coach, just as his predecessor did. The English national team is playing in League B of the Nations League for the first time following relegation from the top tier.
Best Odds
England are the favourites to win in Dublin at 1/2 with Ladbrokes, while Ireland are 6/1 for victory with Midnite with the draw at 33/10 with BetMGM.
Probable Line-ups
Republic of Ireland (4-4-2): Kelleher; Coleman, O'Shea, Collins, Brady; Ogbene, Browne, Smallbone, O'Dowda; Ferguson, Idah
Coach Hallgrimsson is without the injured Gavin Bazunu or Josh Cullen but Evan Ferguson has recovered from injury in time to be called up. He will be vying for the central spot alongside the likes of Callum Robinson, Adam Idah and Troy Parrott, but there may be space for two number nines in Hallgrimsson's system. No fewer than nine players called up for June's matches have been omitted this time - including defensive stalwarts Shane Duffy and Enda Stevens - but Callum Robinson, Alan Browne and Jayson Molumby have earned recalls under the new boss. Moreover, Leicester winger Kasey McAteer is in line for a debut after switching his international allegiance from England.
England (4-2-3-1): Pickford; Alexander-Arnold, Stones, Maguire, Colwill; Rice, Mainoo; Saka, Eze, Gordon; Kane
Cole Palmer, Ollie Watkins and Phil Foden have all pulled out of the squad due to minor injuries while Jude Bellingham is out since last month due to an injury. Young talents such as Angel Gomes, Morgan Gibbs-White, Tino Livramento and Noni Madueke have been called up while experienced players such as Kyle Walker and Kieran Trippier have been left out. Ivan Toney, Aaron Ramsdale, James Maddison and Adam Wharton are other notable absences. The initial system should be a 4-2-3-1 with Bukayo Saka, Eberechi Eze and Anthony Gordon behind captain Harry Kane.
Head To Head
These two nations have played each other on 17 occasions with Ireland winning two times and England registering six victories. The Three Lions’ 3-0 win in a 2020 friendly ended a run of six consecutive draws between the two national teams.
Our Ireland v England Betting Tips
There are 54 places between the two sides in the FIFA rankings (England fourth, Ireland 58th). England have the superior squad and should have enough attacking nous to breach the Ireland backline.
We do not expect a high scoring affair. Hence, we back England to win by a narrow margin. As to the correct score, 1-0 and 2-1 are our picks while Eberechi Eze to have 1+ shots on target is another appealing bet..Rep. of Ireland vs England Bet Builder Tips
