Luton vs Middlesbrough betting preview

Luton concluded last season unbeaten at Kenilworth Road (W16-D7-L0)

The Hatters finished the 2018/19 campaign as champions of Sky Bet League One after blitzing the division between mid-August and early April (W25-D11-L2). They smashed 90 goals en-route to top spot and their fine form included a club record 28-game unbeaten streak. Graeme Jones took charge this summer, but results have been disappointing so far, with the club ending their preseason with a 5-1 thumping by Norwich last weekend. These two sides haven’t faced in a league match since April 1995

The Hatters are adjusting to the departures of top class full backs James Justin and Jack Stacey to Leicester and Bournemouth. They will be boosted by the additions of midfielders James Tunnicliffe and Jacob Butterfield and winger Callum McManaman. Defender Alan Sheehan stepped up his recovery from injury during pre-season, but won't be available for the opening day. Star strikers Danny Hylton and James Collins should lead the line.

Middlesbrough missed out on the play-offs by just a single point last season

Middlesbrough also begin 2019/20 under new management following the axing of Tony Pulis. They have turned to a former fans' favourite, Jonathan Woodgate, to steer them through the choppy waters. Anyway, the new boss has been unable to make sweeping changes due to financial problems. Boro signed off pre-season with a 1-1 draw at home to St-Etienne last Saturday. Boro have won on the opening day of a Football League season in just two of the last 18 seasons (W2 D8 L8).

The visitors will be boosted by the probable return of Darren Randolph (one of the division's best goalkeepers) from a calf strain. Anyway, Boro are without George Friend and Dael Fry on Friday so expect Marc Bola to feature from the off. New signing Marcus Browne and versatile wide man Marvin Johnson both impressed in pre-season and are likely to start on Friday. They have only five senior defenders on their books. Plus, Stewart Downing and Aden Flint moved to Blackburn and Cardiff, while Jon Obi Mikel, Mohamed Besic and Jordan Hugill finishing their loan spells.
